You can go into the on screen menu, go to listening mode set up, then select the input for your DVR. It will list several types of input your receiver may get, and you can select how you want it to handle that type of input. However, your receiver isn't going to be able to play DD unless a DD signal is coming from your DVR.

PCM doesn't neccessarily mean it's two channel. That just means it's a direct signal from your DVR. When you go to watch a blu-ray from your PS3, this is actually what you will want to see... mulit-channel PCM. The PS3 encodes the hd audio codecs itself and sends them to the 606 as linear PCM.

i tried what you said but its not working. its almost like the pcm is over powering the dolby. It must have dolby digital since the light lights up and it says dolby 5.1 otherwise it would just go straight to pcm first. isnt there a way to shut the pcm signal off? i know my dvr has dolby thats how it was hooked up to my old reciever(I just got the 606 wednesday)the only difference now is im getting my audio through hdmi

Are you CERTAIN that the source material you are trying to play is DD? I know that with my DirecTV service, only certain things are DD. TV shows & commercials, one might be DD and the next one not. Even movies on the Premium HD movie channels like Showtime HD, some are DD and some are not.

On the listening mode set up that I talked about, there is an option on how to handle Dolby Digital, just make sure that is set to Dolby Digital and the 606 should display DD each time it is actually getting a DD signal.

If you want to make sure that it is handling Dolby Digital correctly, use something that you KNOW has Dolby Digital, like a DVD. Just make sure that you have set the preferences for that input already.

i tried to hook up my optical to see if that did anything. It didnt that came up pcm too. im thinking my dvr is only pcm which is stupid because this dvr is only four months old(I mean this model just came out 4 months ago, the company hasnt even made a manual for it yet). so you have directv? do you have hd or the regular programming? im curious how you have yours hooked up for directv and what your receiver says and what happens when a DD program comes on. Basically when you watch directv does your receiver say pcm until a DD program comes on then displays DD? I cant check with anything else all i have is my ps3 and everything on that end works great

P.S. Thanks for all the help already! Its still new to me so im trying to figure out what it can and cant do

No problem. It took me a little while to get mine set up the way I wanted too

I have an Elite 360, PS3 & DirecTV HD satellite box all hooked to my 606 via hdmi.

The first thing you want to do (if you haven't already,) is look at the back of your 606 and see what input you have everything plugged in to. i.e. your satellite box is on HDMI 2. Then go to your on screen set up menu and select #1 Input assign You'll see the names of several types of components you can hook up to your 606, and on the right side you'll see the inputs you can assign to them. Set it up so all your inputs are labelled correctly. This will make it a lot easier to set your input preference modes for each of your devices.

On my DirecTV HR-20 box, I have my input preferences as follows.

Analog/PCM **** PLII movie
Dolby Digital **** Dolby Digital
DTS **** DTS
D.F. 2 channel **** PLII Movie
D.F. Mono **** TV Logic

On my PS3 I have

Analog/PCM **** Direct
Dolby Digital **** Direct
DTS **** Direct
D.F. 2ch **** PLII Movie
D.F. Mono **** TV Logic

You set your PS3 to Direct because the PS3 handles the decoding of all of the high quality lossless audio tracks itself. Just make sure that your PS3 audio is set to linear PCM instead of bitstream, and you'll be enjoying awesome lossless soundtracks.

Most blu-rays will default to the lossless track if it has one, but a few don't. To make sure you are getting the lossless track, just hit the display button on your PS3 remote to see if it's Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD or one of the other lossless types which I currently can't recall will show up as.......

Anyway, if the PS3 does not show it's playing the HD track, and the box lists that it has one; hit the triangle button on the PS3 remote to open the info menu and go to the musical note icon. Just keep pressing on that note icon to cycle through the available sound tracks.

thanks for all your help! I think i figured out what the problem is. I did alot of researching on the net on older models of my dvr and came across one that said audio output thru hdmi will default to either DD or lpcm you have to go into a service menu to change that. Well beings that they dont even have a user manual for my dvr i cant figure out how to do it. If anyone has the same model maybe they can help. Scientific Atlanta IPN430MC. Im also using Harmony 520 and downloaded the older dvr's codes but they dont work on this one. Honestly im not impressed with this dvr
