Now heres the thing.. sony is known for making their product information sound and look misleading (trust me i know) so i want to know if anyone can TRULY confirm if the new s550 decodes 7.1 (not just 5.1) dts.hd MA and Hi res ...very clearly the sony press release shows that this model decodes the 7.1 trueHD, 7.1 DD+ and 7.1 analog but again it still words it in a misleading way for the DTS-HD... if u look at the flagship model the s5000es it clearly says it decodes 7.1 trueHD, dd+, MA and hi res but it really words it differently for the s550 product info...can anyone please enlighten me...thanks

The last two days, already members of this site, who have received their preordered BDP-S550, say they are getting not only 7.1 DTS HD MA over the direct bit stream, but by way of the analog outputs! I had advised several members on what to do as far as signifying, whether or not the player could do the decoding internally! It's all told in the audio readout menu, using the remote control. Once you place any Blu-ray disc, be it Dolby True HD, LPCM or DTS HD MA, with a 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack, it will show up on the audio menu screen. That menu from the player, tells you what the player can decode internally. Using the audio set-up menu from the Blu-ray disc is misleading and doesn't signify nor has any direct relation to what the player is doing, but what audio codecs are available for processing. So far, everyone who has made this test, has said that the 550 clearly shows on its display DTS HD MA. There can be no doubting that the 550 is good to go for DTS HD MA and this places Sony way ahead of the Blu-ray game. This is especially the case with anyone who isn't or can't use HDMI bit streaming that most new players will utilize, but not on the analog side! ![]() Last edited by Blu-RayLover; 10-07-2008 at 02:19 AM. |

Two people on this board say they have the player. The first uses optical and could not help with an answer. The second said it decodes dts-MA. But, he just made the one post and did not answer any inquiries about how he confirmed that, what settings he's using, etc. That second poster also posts on AVS forum, where he remains the only person known to have the S550. But, it's the same story there - no information about any of the particulars. His posts, in fact, are in a thread on the Pioneer 51FD. So, at this point, I haven't seen anything I would describe as TRULY confirming dts-MA decoding.

thank you everyone for the replies but i know FOR SURE the 550 decodes DTS Master audio internally... this i know for a FACT.. i just want to know if it decodes up to 7.1 descrete channels worth of the master audio and not just 5.1....
im afraid of getting a dts-master audio 7.1 track movie and only having my player pass only 5.1 to my receiver... |

If you configure the player for 7.1, you'll get all eight channels from discs that have it. If you configure it for 5.1, it will downmix the rears into the surrounds. Last edited by BIslander; 10-07-2008 at 05:12 AM. |

I will be getting my delivery today and will be hooking it up to my 7.1 analog multichannel Yamaha. What would you like me to look for ?

My AVR lacks HDMI and I would likely wire/configure as follows (a fairly typical setup, I would think): HDMI to the display 5.1 analog to the AVR for lossless BD playback Optical to the AVR for DVD playback Audio Output Priority = Analog Multichannel Assuming that lossless codecs are properly decoded for output over analog (yes?), I am concerned about the optical connection for DVDs. I would prefer to use digital bitstream to my receiver for DVDs to take advantage of better bass management and signal processing in the receiver. But, p66 of the manual says "When Audio Output Priority is set to HDMI, Coaxial/Optical, or Multi Channel Analog, LPCM 2ch signals are output from jacks other than the selected jack". Does that mean the optical output will always be stereo PCM when the Audio Priority is Mulit Channel Analog? Or, is it merely saying 96 kHz is only supported for the Priority Output? It would be a pain if we had to change the Audio Output Priority depending on the disc being played. In a similar vein, will the HDMI handshake with the TV affect how LPCM or analog are output? The manual is silent on the issue, which is usually a good sign. But, not always. |

I have a question. For argument sake, if this player does indeed decode DTS-HD MA internally, does that mean it can send it PCM through HDMI to a receiver that can't decode the DTS-HD MA? I'm sure this has been answered before, but I just want to clear this up. Any input would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

When are you getting your player? I'm thinking about ordering from Sony Style only if I can get a straight answer on whether this player sends DTS-MA through PCM via HDMI to my receiver. My receiver is 7.1 but does not decode DTS-MA which is why I would like to get a no B.S. answer on whether I would get DTS-MA through my receiver via HDMI.

Exactly:
Have a Denon AVR-887 with HDMI 1.1 and 7.1 analog. Need to confirm that Sony S-550 internally decodes dts-HD MA and outputs BOTH: PCM 7.1 multichannel via HDMI. 7.1 analog via RCA. Thanks. |

Possibly bad news. I just got off the phone with Sony tech support and was told the S550 WILL NOT internally decode DTS Master Audio and send to the receiver as PCM over HDMI.
How can these jerks at Sony be so out of touch with the market? They added DTS-MA support to the PS3, but can't figure out how to include it in their newest standalone player! I'm going to cancel my pre-order and wait for the Panasonic 55. I hope everyone who ordered a S550 sends it back ... then maybe Sony will get the message. |
