Default Standalone Blu-ray players are in 1.7% of U.S. households

Quote:
Parks Associates, a market research and consulting firm, says stand-alone Blu-ray players are in 1.7% of U.S. households versus high-def TV from cable or satellite providers, which is in 26% of U.S. households.

Would that be almost 2 million sold? My math skills suck this early in the morning.

I wonder would the percentage is for non-stand-alone Blu-Ray players such as PS3 or people that make their own Blu-Ray player box (PC) like my co-worker.

Let's have a look:

There are about 117 million households in the US; last reported figure was 116.783 million in 2007 (link).

Therefore, 1.7 percent of that gives us just about 2 million standalone players sold to date (plus any households with two or more players).

For reference, as of February 2008, total HD DVD standalone players sold in the US were 600K. (link), 85K in 2006 and 515K in 2007.

2007 sales were pretty much even (link). Therefore, BD player sales in 2007 were also about 510K. Sales in 2006 were very low, maybe 30K.

My educated WAG is that standalone Blu-ray player sales in the US in 2008 so far are about 1.4 million. Nearly three times 2007 sales.

I think those numbers are pretty awesome, if you look at DVD over the same 26 month period in the US, (if counting from the first blu in July 2006 launch to Sept 2008). DVD sold 2.3 million units in the same number of months (March 1997 launch to May 1999) and blu is at 2 million units. So I think we are right on track to following the growth of DVD, and DVD had the edge back then as a radical new medium. Cant wait to see the sales figures in January to see how blu does over the holidays, specially with $149 specials.

Granted, DVD had a 6 month advantage with numbers at 2.3mil before its 3rd holiday season to really get added to wish lists, I still think blu will kick some butt this holiday season.

Oh, ok...I'm one of those HTPC guys that builds his own. I will get a standalone next month (not to replace my HTPC though).

The BDA reported 6.5 Million BD Players as of CEDIA '08. See chart here:

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/0...ebuts-thi.html

Subtract an estimate of PS3's sold by then (about 5.3 million) and that means about 1.2 Million Standalones total in US as of Sept 2008.

I think watching the standalone player demo is good only to see if BD is heading out of the videophile/audiophile territory and more into mainstream consumer acceptance. That's not going to really happen until Blu-Ray players are $100-200 in range, and PS3s are not going to drop to that range anytime soon. PS3s have the advantage or attracting gamers however, and thus it has sold more but how many PS3 gamers have 5-20 Blu Ray movies is the question?

With Amazon offering a Samsung BD player at $226 with a free copy of Ultimate Matrix edition, I have had 2 friends jump into Blu-Ray now. And they are no where near the video freaks I am, so I see it as "this is starting to work" territory.
