leave it set at 0 . it seems to sound a little odd if it is turned up (it seems to add a harsh tone to it, the best i can describe it).

Are you talking bout the Volume control in the PS3 itself? If so leave it at 0 because it distorts the sound.

For DTs 0 is fine but dolby tracks sound quieter/less oomph however i have nopticed it does sound harsher so instead just up the volume on the receiver itself.

Not only do I notice the sound get a little more harsh, I find that the soundtrack becomes really front heavy when I do that. I don't even know if thats possible, but, it seems the fronts become heavily favored. Maybe it is just my imagination.

Setting the audio volume to anything but zero can lead the PS3 to produce clipped and distorted audio that can actually mess up a speaker if played loud enough. I wouldn't play with fire...

can it be set to a negative value?

Because I would LOVE to be able to turn it down a bit, as my sound is LOUD with barely any juice going through my speakers. Especially with DVDs and Games. I'd like to be able to push a little more wattage through my speakers as a comfortable listening volume is just barely enough to not under power the speakers.

I don't understand the logic of your request. Nevertheless, the default volume level is "Normal". And then it can go -2 or +2.

It's not in settings. When a movie/song/game is playing, press TRIANGLE. A menu pops up on the screen then choose an Audio icon. That's where the volume is set.

I have a set of Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1 connected to my PS3. The initial power from the amp is not equally pushed to both speakers. Turning the volume knob up just a tiny bit yields only the right speaker giving sound. You have to turn a little bit more before the left speaker is activated. Even at this point, there is not very much wattage going through the speakers. Trouble is, a comfortable volume for DVDs and Games from the PS3 is just beyond this point. Speakers need a certain amount of wattage per decibel to acurately produce sound to their full potential. These are 200 watt speakers and I barely get to turn up the juice when using my PS3. So when gaming, I always turn down the master volume for every game to about 50% in the in game options, yeilding much crisper and accurate sound. I cannot do this with DVDs, so I have had to live with it. Also, the master volume setting for some games only affects the volume for gameplay, not for the cutscenes, so whenever it switches to a cutscenes I would be deafened by the volume jump. R&C and BF:BC are like this

Blu-ray movies seem to have a smidge lower native volume, so it hasn't really been much of a problem. But they do still get loud much quicker than I'd like. So all this is why I'd like a native output volume control on the PS3 so that I can have a wider and more comfortable range of control on my volume. I will have to check this out now.

Wow, I hate to say it, but it sounds like you need to upgrade to a new sound system.

Well, no. Speakers need watts running through them to drive them properly. Its true that ideally the speakers would be driven equally at ANY given volume and wattage used from the amp, but in this case the volume is so low at that point that its not a useable volume, so the initial imbalance is null. They very very quickly ramp up and become balanced. Problem is, just after that is where the PS3 hits a comfortable volume----typically before the point at which a decent amount of watts are flowing to really drive the speakers so they don't sound as accurate as they could. This could be fixed with a decent pre-amp, but I don't have one. I also have a set of Altec Lansing speakers that when severely under watted (low low volumes) are all bass. there isn't enough power to pull out the mid and high ranges with the first few clicks of volume. You'll see it in car speakers too. Take some 80 watt speakers and run them from your deck which probably only outputs 20 -30 watts max per channel and you'll likely hear static or imbalanced sound.
