for the $ range your looking at, it would be best to go for a HTIB, or Home Theater In A Box system. If you could splurge a little more, you could piece together a much better system right off the bat, but if that is impossible, then the HTIB is the route to go. For what you quoted as a price, take a look at this

Negative...
I don't think HTIB is the way to go. If the budget for Receiver and speakers is $1000, I would recommend starting out with a reasonable AVR that can decode the HD Codecs via HDMI. As for speakers, if you really want something worth while, start with maybe a 2.0 or 3.0 speaker system and then add the rest later. I'm sure the peeps on here can help out with suggestions for your budget. |

i don't mean to argue with MarcosG, but it all depends on your budget. I suggested the HTIB because of what you wanted to spend, MarcosG is projected what you would spend. If you are going to expand in the near future, then MarcosG is right on the money, if not, then take my suggestion of HTIB.

I know a lot of the audiophiles on this site won't admit it, but there really are some great HTib's out there. Onkyo makes a great 7.1 surround system that decodes the latest HD codecs and the speakers are rather nice for HTiB and have some real power to them. A friend of mine has this and it rocks his house. And it's right in your total budget you were looking to spend on AV receiver and speakers combined.
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S9100...=ATVPDKIKX0DER As for a Blu-ray player goes look into the Sony BDP-S350 or a Panasonic. |

I would not recommend going HTIB with that budget either, don't do that to yourself lol.
Receiver - a lot of nice options here. Onkyo 606, Yahama 663, Pioneer 1018 some lower end Marantz receviers on accessories4less.com. Speakers - If you don't want to go research/audition speakers, i'd recommend the Energy Classis Take 5.1s...they are being liquidated for a great price http://www.amazon.com/Energy-Classic.../dp/B001202C44 If you think you'll get the upgrade bug, i'd go a 2.0 first and then gradually upgrade once you start saving more money. I wouldn't go HTiB either you should just start with a reciever possibly Onkyo 605 or something similar 200+ ish price tag, then get a center speaker and possibly some floorstanding speakers this price depends on your range Polk makes some decent ones so you can start out with 2 floor standing speaker, and a center, as for a blu-ray player I would def recommend the PS3 due to the price and what you get with everything, if you are into games that is a huge plus. You might be looking at alittle higher budget but you will be happier you went this route instead of buying HTiB.

Try hard enoguh and you can keep to your budget with something decent.
If you buy a Blu-ray player that decodes audio internally, you can get a receiver that doesn't decode but merely accepts audio over HDMI. Yamaha 463 - buy.com has it for $250 shipped. Now you have $750 for speakers (speakers should be 70% of your budget anyway). There are a bunch of ways you can spend that kind of money. If you go with the energy system, sell the sub and add an eD for $350. That make it exactly $750. That sub will make up for any lack of bass the Energy system would produce. |

If you do end up getting a blu-ray that internally decodes, i'd check out the Marantz 4002 at accessories4less.com for $299. Accepts audio over HDMI and sounds excellent. |

I second the HTIB suggestion. I know it's difficult to suggest something you yourself wouldn't use, but let's not forget who we're talking to here. I know we're being asked what we'd buy, but for someone just getting into home theater an HTIB--especially the Onkyo 7100 or 9100--is not a bad recommendation. The 7100 is based on the TX-SR606 and the 9100 receiver appears to have the same features as the 706. Those are both good receivers to base a home theater around.
Blu-ray - PS3 or a Panasonic. The BDP-35 (2008) or BDP-60 (2009). Receiver - I'd stick with Onkyo. The 606 is still a great value, but the new 607 looks even better. Speakers - Buy what you can afford. For someone just getting into this I'd stick with the 5.1 boxed sets. Polk and Klipsch have some good 5.1 options.
