Default The Thing or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

Looking for some horror movies this Halloween and surprisingly, I haven't seen either of these classics. Which one should I buy? Yes, I can only buy one right now. Which one is the better movie and which movie has the better transfer?

Buy both.

But if it's a blind buy, I'd perhaps suggest The Thing, as it'll probably have better replay value over time. TCM is a classic, but it's also a slower-moving early 70s film.
I'm just thinking practicality here.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

If I recall correctly, they dropped some of the great features from the DVD for the Blu-Ray of The Thing.

A serious skip.

I havent personally seen tcm on bluray but this movie is great. it is a movie you will either love or hate. There is really no background music which gives it a documentary style creepiness to it.

As for the thing its a great movie that i have to buy on bluray.

Texas Chainsaw is the way to go if you are looking for the perfect disturbing Halloween horror movie. I have not seen it on Blu yet, but it should be a part of any true horror movie collection. Yet, The Thing is an icredible piece of cinema also worth a spot in your collection. You pretty much can't go wrong as far as movies go.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my favorite horror flick of the seventies. The Thing is my favorite of the eighties. They are both worth it if you're a fan. I prefer TCM, but you can't really compare the two.

First of all, SHAME on you for not seeing these two classics.
Get 'em both. They are both a great addition to any Horror collection.

I've only seen The Thing and the remake version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If the plot of the original TCM is anything like the remake, it is an act in frustration to watch as all the victims do the absolutely stupidest things. Maybe TCM spawned all of the horror movie cliches of stupid people doing stupid things, but it doesn't make it any more watchable to know that.

I really like The Thing and could easily watch it multiple times (which I have). It's a shame they dropped some of the special features, but I didn't really bother with them before. If you pick it up in the Universal Halloween 3-pack, it's a fairly good bargain.

Both films are absolute rippers.

Buy The Thing first if you like Sci-Fi Horror.

Buy TCM first if you prefer the Serial Killer/Slasher genre.

But at the end of the day, buy both!

Without question "The Thing", one of John Carpenter's best!

Totally agree. You will view The Thing more even though they dropped some features and I believe it is a better movie as I own both.

You definitely need to see both at some time or another! I honestly can't choose which one I'd suggest first.

I would say The Thing. I never liked the original TCM. I thought it was corny and too comedic. I maybe one of the few that perfer the remake. The Thing which is also a remake is a good movie though. A great monster movie that you will enjoy.

For the transfer...I'd go for The Thing....for the movie itself...I would go for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is cheaper also.

The Thing - no question. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell, enough said.

Both!

Both are great transfers, but T.C.M. is older and the source is far less impressive. But it adds to the atmosphere.
