Yes, you can save them to an external drive. Just remember that if its a Windows Media PC, only the PC with the same computer name as the one that redeemed it can play it back. If its an iTunes PC/MAC, up to five computers can authorized to play it back under the same account that reedemed it.
I have all my iTunes music, videos, and podcasts on an external drive for safe keeping. Its pretty easy to move the iTunes folder to an external drive and then just go to preferences to point iTunes to it. |
