Default Michael Mann's The Keep Blu-ray petition

Someone has started a petition to bring the cult classic movie The keep to bluray. It would be awesome if this could get enough signatures since the last time this film was released was on laserdisc. Please go to this website http://keepfilm.com and sign. Thank you for the support!

I think your Blu-Ray name is the answer you'll get from the studio.

Would love to have this on blu though, and a directors cut would be even better.

This is such an awesome movie, but I doubt it will ever get the release that it truly deserves. I signed but I fear it will not help much. Here's hoping that it does though.

Someone really needs to get Michael Mann behind this himself. Hollywood bends over backwards to please working directors, since no one wants to piss off a person that can hire or fire hundreds of workers per movie.

I agree. I think scream factory would be the best way to release the film. The question is though if paramount will actually give the rights to distribute the film to them.

I signed that petition a while back. Months later, they've only accrued 410 signatures?? Disappointing. I suspect that Paramount would be happy to licence the film out if they received a generous or substantial offer.

The problematic issue of a new dvd or bd of The Keep appears to be the use of non-commissioned, unauthorised Tangerine Dream music. My understanding is that a dvd or bd release would have to pay out significant money to either Edgar Froese or a record company, taking away a hefty chunk of any profits.

It's reported that the version of the film currently on streaming media sites has an altered soundtrack which would back that up. I haven't seen a streamed version so am uncertain if that's really true (I just own a so-so laserdisc rip).

btw Altering the soundtrack probably hurts the film as I consider it an integral part of the experience.

Not sure why it hasn't been released already. Must be the music rights.

I was under the impression that Michael Mann wanted nothing to do with the film ever again after the studio interference involved. I made the mistake of watching the film for the first time a few years ago after I had just finished the novel by F. Paul Wilson (which I absolutely loved) and thought the film was dog doo. With the cast and crew involved, I was surprised it became such a train wreck. So much from the book was cut out or changed that I don't know how the film even made any sense unless you read the novel. I've read that Mann originally had a 3 hr version of the film that was severely edited by the studio prior to release so a lot of my complaints would probably be erased with that version and I might even pick it up if that was released.

The biggest travesty with the situation though is that it completely soured F. Paul Wilson on Hollywood and we've never gotten a Repairman Jack movie.

I also hated it when I first saw it after reading the book. A 2nd viewing changed my mind and I appreciated it quite a bit. I've read that F. Paul Wilson has actually re-appraised the film after working on a graphic novel adaptation and realising quite how difficult it can be to adapt unrestricted written work to another format.

A documentary about them putting back together the director's cut and the full movie would make a great BD double-bill. There's a decent (albeit limited) fanbase for it too.

Without the book the movie was a just random scenes one-after-another!

While Paramount is still up and running it won't happen, and never with the Tangerine Dream score.
Plus no Hd master exists so a new one will need to be struck that will cost money and I have heard various things about an IP or the negative even surviving in either cut.
Your best hope is a non US based label but again prints are not exactly in good supply, let alone Mann going anywhere near it.
I love the film watched it last week infact film 4 show the LD master a lot

The BFI have a 35mm print of The Keep Is the film stuck in legal or do Paramount just have no interest in releasing it? The film is back up on Netflix in the UK and in HD.
