Default Hello!

Hi all,

I've just joined this morning as I bought an HD TV on Thursday. I plumped for a Panasonic 50" Viera and very pleased with it I am.

However, I see how it exposes the sometimes lacklustre quality of standard DVD definition so I scanned the web over the weekend looking for info on the 'new' formats.

In my own mind Blu-ray seems to be the way forward for the following reasons, but please correct me or comment on my thoughts:

1. More studio support than HD-DVD, 8 major players versus 3 if I'm not mistaken.

2. Greater storage capability than HD-DVD.

3. Some seriously major manufacturer support, including HP - the largest IT corporation in the world I believe.

4. The PS3. If it does the same kind of fandango as the PS1 and PS2 in world sales, it will put Blu-ray into many many homes.

5. Frankly, 'Blu-ray' sounds loads cooler than 'HD-DVD'!

So, that's brought me here. I think I'll plump for the Panasonic DMP-BD10 as far as hardware goes. It seems to get good reviews and I've always been very impressed by the quality of their video goods.

It retails for between £900 and £1200 ($1746-$2328) here in the UK, so once my AV fund has been replenished, I'll dive in.

Cheers!

Rob

Welcome,
You are not going to get any arguments here about your thoughts on Blu-ray, however there are many more advantages than the ones you have highlighted (HP have taken to sitting on the fence - Dell, Apple and Sun are in up to their eye balls). The players have a way to come yet, especially with the audio. Although the PS3 is games console it's apparently quite a mean Blu-ray player and it does have HDMI 1.3 (for the audio part, it will only be useful for audio once the receivers catch up) and is the cheapest Blu-ray player in many parts of the world. If you are planning on waiting I would be looking at the Panasonic BD-10a (not as yet released). I however suspect once you see a good Blu-ray set up, waiting will not be an option.

Hehehe! Hi Blue.

I haven't seen a Blu-ray set-up at all yet and I'm having trouble waiting. I'll check out the BD10a though, seems like there's more hardware out there than I realised. I'll buy around the end of June (mid year bonus) but if something really good comes about I'll stick it on the card.

My current DVD player is a Denon DVD-A1 which is an awesome player and I'll keep it for audio CD playback until a time when I chop it in for a dedicated CD player.

I'm glad Apple are going Blu-ray as I have an iMac G5 and I don't think I could go back to an MS platform. All good fun these new formats! I may even grab a PS3 (out this week in the UK) to tide me over.

Dear Bank Manager.....

Two syllables are better than 5! Short and sharp is the way to go.

Sorry to hear that - you have just kissed goodbye to 850 or so pounds. Not bad for one weeks effort.

Apple are not going Blu - they are founding members and on the Blu-ray Associations board. They had a large input in to the formatting of the Blu-ray disc.

Put yourself out of your misery - just get the PS3. Set top box's will come down rapidly and improve greatly - the PS3 should keep you happy for a while, at least that is my theory. Keep talking about Apple like that and you will make friends with one of the senior moderators here (Deci).

After many months of discourse, I've realized it is easier to type BD than HD-DVD, and it is easier to say "BD" or "Blu-ray" than "HD-DVD". Silly reason but this one works for me!

Mine is the Intel.

The G5 was powerPC for a year or so then the processors moved to Intel. I think it's a superb computer.
