Default Question about The Godfather

Okay this is my very favorite film ever. I love all the Godfather films, even the third one.

One thing that has ALWAYS bugged me though was the scene with Michael, Solozzo and McCluskey in the restaurant.

Solozzo and Michael speak in Italian, but it's never subtitled. Every version I've EVER seen, including this new Restoration one that I'm watching now, never translates for the non-Italian speaking viewers what they are saying.

Has there ever been a translation posted on the net of exactly what is being said?

Subtitles were left out on purpose by Coppola, as you are not meant to know what is being said. But someone has done a rough translation on youtube if you are interested. It's not essential to the plot.

Thank you. Why were they left out on purpose though? Can't believe I haven't heard that before.

edit: I read on another board just now that the viewers are supposed to be in the same situation as McCluskey. Not knowing what is being said.

that's basically the idea, yeah. Also, subtitles would distract in that scene, in my opinion anyway. The buildup of tension would be shot.

The Godfather Saga is too my favorite film series of all-time even the much hated third film. But for me the funniest moment in the first movie is the HORRIBLE angles they used when Sonny is beating down Carla's husband on the street and because of the horrible angle you see him stopping short 2 feet from connecting sometimes hahahaha. WOW gets me everytime!
