Default Hacked by a Blu-Ray disc!

I guess it's not enough that a compromised USB stick, hard drive firmware, or Bios can royally screw you, but apparently now Blu-Ray players are also being targeted as an attack vector.

How this applies to home entertainment is this, each disc (I bet this is baked in to newer discs) will have software that will make it unplayable in a blu-ray player after so many times (as decided by disc maker)

another sickening way to pimp out digital

Perhaps, I see it more likely that if you want peace of mind you'll be forced to play the upgrade game because manufacturers won't fix this on older players.

Except there will be blu-ray players made for 2-4 more years, after that will be none, so the scheme to limit how many times you can play discs on your players will be the end game

I wouldn't underestimate the danger in this. As one of the article's commenters pointed out, if a compromised disc allows a hacker access to your machine remotely, he could access your LAN, and then every other device on your network (including any PCs and Laptops). Then...anything goes...

Suggest you re-read the article. It has nothing to do with what you are speculating. Rather, it's about malware being embedded in to a BD which can in turn use the Blu-ray spec's version of Java to exploit your machine.

Yeah, that's what I got out of it as well.

For the most part I don't think anyone has anything to worry about if they are buying legit Blu-Ray discs from legit sources/retailers, the same with USB drives (if one opts to update their firmware that way).

This only seems like it would be a problem if, for example, someone were to buy a Blu-Ray movie from an ebay seller, an Amazon 3rd party seller, or the like, and rather than being a legit official copy of the movie, it's a well-disguised bootleg with malware on it.

So, just be careful about that sort of thing, and you should be fine.

Here's a possibility - based on recent revelations of the NSA injecting compromised firmware into PC's and/or hard drives by intercepting them in transit, modifying them, before releasing them to continue on to their destination. No reason the same wouldn't (or hasn't) be done to people buying legit discs.

No reason beyond the presumption that the NSA has better things to do than intercept my copy of The Rape of the Vampire in the hopes of taking over my Blu-ray player, anyway.

Just don't buy any discs from Iran, they've got a lot of experience with Stuxnet ...

[Show spoiler]P.S. - 'Stux was for PLC's, so no worries there when it comes to Blu's

For every invention there is good and bad in it (depending on what side of the tech you fall under)

for home entertainment companies, the hacking and taking over your player and net by a blu-ray player is bad - which is allowed by that limiting software bundled on the blu-rays

for home entertainment companies, the limited play software that only allows you to play it so many times on blu-ray player is good to their twisted minds - which is allowed by that limiting software bundled on the blu-rays

Also why do you think they insisted that they needed BDLIVE ???

IT sure was not for extra content, it was even people who dont have wifi in their blu-ray players can be hacked and/or stop playing blu-rays cause they can be breached over electric lines via 1 way broadband over power lines.

They already tried that and was called Divx which failed miserably.

I just checked with the alien who lives next door to me. He says they don't even have this technology on his home planet yet.

Personally, I'd be flattered to know the NSA thought me important enough to spy on. I'd also feel sorry for the poor sap agent burdened with monitoring my boring life.

So which disks have this new tech? Give us some titles so we know to avoid them. (somehow I don't think I should hold my breath ).
