Do you have any software installed to playback Blu-rays?
What are you trying to use?
Did the drive itself come with software?
I am using the latest version of Power DVD and am pretty happy with it.

You can't use Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center to playback BD's on HP Pavilions - they're not setup for Blu-Ray playback.

Your program for playing back Blu-Ray's is QuickPlay - you can initialize it from the Quick Launch button (circle with an arrow in the lower right corner, usually on the left side next to the DVD button) or go to Pearl (Vista Start icon), All Programs, then QuickPlay.

Before using it, you need to update it to version 3.7 or you'll still have problems. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner, then click on Update when the menu appears. It'll automatically download the 3.7 version from the HP site. Install it, reboot and then try again.

One other thing to note about BD playback - you can't use your mouse for menu selection, so don't freak when all you can select is the Play and Stop buttons with your mouse. You need to use either a remote (if your system has one like mine) or the arrow keys on your keyboard. The system assumes you're using a remote which is why mouse functions are normally disabled for most menu functions on BD movies.

QuickPlay's BD playback program is a customized version of Cyberlink's PowerDVD. Don't bother trying to update PowerDVD from the Cyberlink site - you can't update a 3rd party (HP) program with the OEM software. Use PowerDVD for other media uses.

If you haven't yet done so, you need to go to the HP Support site and update your system, or run the HP Update utility and Windows Update on your system. HP Update can be accessed by clicking on Pearl, All Programs, HP folder, the click on HP update and let it update your system. To get to your system support page, get the HP Product # of your system (PRODUCT, not the model # - it'll usually have a #ABA at the end of it), then enter it on the HP Support site when it asks for your System Product #. The Product # will take you to the specific configuration of your system, whereas the Model # will only get you a list of many other systems, of which yours may not be a part of.

Most HP Support site Driver updates haven't yet uploaded the 3.7 version of QuickPlay, which is why I said to update it from within the program.

Other than that, the only other problem you may encounter is with an external display. HDCP (BD content protection) will not allow you to playback BD's when using 2 active displays (PC and external). To get it to play correctly to the external monitor, you need to set it as your PC's primary display.

Also, with external playback, you need to reset your default sound output, which is normally set to your PC speakers. Open your Sound options, then reset the default to HDMI or SPDIF (yes, select SPDIF even if you have HDMI) . This will redirect the sound to your external monitor speakers over the HDMI cable. Of course, if you're using DVI-HDMI, that's different, since DVI doesn't carry audio.

This should get you going. Just remember to update QP to 3.7.
