Default Sony ships 3.7 m PS3s Q2 2011, Gap now 2.07m from 360 (close it this holiday?)

Info is here... http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/fina...q2_sonypre.pdf

In comparison, 360 shipped 2.3m units and Wii shipped 1.7m units.

That puts the PS3 right at 55.53m units total (360 is 57.6m, Wii is 89.36m).

Do you think that Sony has a shot of overtaking the 360 this quarter? They shipped 1.4m more this quarter.

Personally, I think they can if MS doesn't cut the price. I do expect MS to do an emergency price cut at this point.

I guess it goes to show that USA =/= World.

I guess that means the 360 is now more reliable and therefore not as many people are having to buy replacements

With the new COD coming out I'm sure M$ will be doing some value bundles to get the sales so I wouldn't expect the PS3 to close too much, could be wrong though.

Last year the Kinect was the big trump card, but this year it won't be the "big great new thing around the block".

MS has gotten a COD campaign (massive $$ on Kinect, Forza and COD commercials it seems), but PS3 had the Battlefield one and I've seen Uncharted/Subway about everywhere ... so

In the end, it might also be the price that decides a lot of things.
I just saw the Toys R' Us Xmas catalogue, and I was pretty shocked at how tame the Xbox pricing was (of course the Wii has a double spread, but at this point in time who cares?).

Thanks to the PS3 new price, they have the Uncharted 3 320Gb bundle at $299, facing straight out the 360 250gb (with Kinect) at ... $399.
Only under that, in smaller prints, do you see a meager 4Gb 360 with Kinect at $299.
Unless you -really- care about Kinect (and we are pretty much a whole year later), the price comparison is this year not favorable to the 360 -at all-.

I also found interesting that the 360 spread mentions the need for a membership (1 month included!), while the PS3 side only mentions that it is Netflix and Hulu capable, with stereoscopic 3D on top.

Sony's financials are tricky, they shipped a lot of PS3s but they changed their forecast to yet another loss this year. Yes the strong yen and the tsunami messed them up, but IIRC that's 4 straight years of losses. Pretty tough.

With the price drops, I don't see why not. For 300 dollars you get a 320GB PS3 with Uncharted 3. For 400 dollars you get either the Gears of War Xbox (with the game and two controllers and specially designed system) or the COD one with two controllers the game and special system, also 320GB. So save 100 dollars, get one controller and not a design system...awesome deal. I see consumers tackling that for the holiday.

If it doesn't to you or it bothers you, you don't have to enter the thread. For me and many others, it's an interesting trend.

Yeah, well with the new 2 console max activation for downloaded games, people are going to start having 2nd thoughts about adding more consoles. I know I will once my 40GB dies. Same with renewing my PS+ membership.

How can I troll a fanboy thread? It makes no difference to me who sells how many consoles. Of course the American economy is crap and Microsoft is an American company, so in that vein, I hope Microsoft does well. And Sony too.

More of curiosity as to why it does to anyone without a financial interest in Sony. But here's a thought, if the PS3 is selling strong, but Sony is posting losses, it most likely means the PS4 is being pushed back.

Thumbs up

Its inevitable that the Ps3 will catch the 360. it has been slowly but surely closing the gap. 360s price drops and Kinect have helped to hold off the PS3 but still not enough.

The real question is how many people are actually playing their consoles?

From what I read, it's a sony financial report. Playstation is just part of the buisiness, and they seem to be having trouble in the TV department more than anywhere else.

EDIT: And to see that the gap between the two is now 1million is a great achievement for Sony, considering xbox had the market to itself for a whole year.

At least Sony's doing better than Panasonic. Sony's 4 years of losses combined will still be a little less than Panasonic's $6 billion loss this year.

How do you know that. Financial losses never stopped them from cutting the prices before. It didn't stop them from releasing the Vita either. They look to be concentrating on their TV division more than the gaming division at this point. Whether you like it or not - and I'm going to guess that you prefer the 360 over the PS3 from alot of your posts around here (which is fine - it's just a console after all) - PS4 will probably be releasing in the same time frame as the 720.

This next time, I think MS will easily get America at launch since they developed a strong brand loyalty in the nation (Xbox Live, Kinect, Halo, Gears, how well the console / controller is suited for FPS games like COD, and in a small part - patriotism). Outside of the US, I think Sony's first party strength is going to help them a lot more out of the gate.

I'm sorry but that statement makes no sense to me. Specifically the "patriotism" comment. What does being patriotic have to do with the type of console we choose purchase? And your comment in regards to how the Xbox is better suited for FPSs?? I guess I don't see it.

US video game informational/review companies have blatantly and outrageously favored Microsoft this generation, for whatever reason.

As a result, a lot of the US bought 360s because they were "told" to. I can't count the number of times friends of mine with 360s had "information" like Metar Gear Solid Rising was 360 exclusive (IGN actually reported this).

Patriotism is probably not the right word though.

I agree with you in regards to the misleading of consumers. Either console has it's pros & cons. It just comes down to what you as the consumer wants.
