Default Polk Audio Monitor 50

Disclaimer: I'm definitely a noob when it comes to home theater equipment.

I have three questions about the Polk Monitor 50 speakers.

1) Could my Sony STR-DG720 adequately power these speakers?

2) If I was to replace my front Polk RM6751 Satellite Speakers with the Polk Monitor 50 speakers, would the improved sound justify the ~$300 price-tag?

3) Are these speakers ever on sale (internet or local store)?

I would think so.

Got my pair off of Amazon for 200 dollars, wait for a sale.

Thanks, Jason!

$200 is a killer deal! Would you recommend the speakers to a friend?

I heard Fry's has them on sale every now-and-then, also.

Yeah, for that price range I don't think you will find a better tower.

Look at the cherry ones in my sig below. Scroll down and you'll find two for around $90 each shipped. That's the way to go.

Killer!

I'm always a little nervous about used products, though.

Yeah, I like new as well. Just wait, I am sure Amazon will run them new at $100 a piece again...

Thanks just ordered both of them. Can't beat 180 shipped. With the money I saved from buying the open box pair, I was able to get a set of Polk Monitor 30's, so I got 4 speakers for the cost of 2 brand new 50's.

It'll be a good day for you when all four arrive!

I wouldn't wait too long for them to go on sale as the monitor series are discontinued.

If the Monitors are discontinued, you should be able to find some good close outs...

This is what I would expect to replace them, they are essentially the same speaker.

It's through Amazon's Warehouse though so there shouldn't be any problems if you need to return it, if you needed to.

That's a good point; Amazon.com is trustworthy. However, imagine the inconvenience of shipping those suckers back!

I currently have the Polk RM6750 speaker system. If I was to replace the front two speakers with the Polk Monitor 50s, would it overpower the rest of my system (center speaker and surrounds)?

You would probably want to upgrade your center with the matching center (CS1) which I have listed below. Also, I think you wouldn't need to return the speakers unless you didn't like how they sounded (you should know how they sound if you've auditioned them at a store or somewhere) or something was scratched deeply or something unusual. You can think negatively about it but you could also take the risk and have enough money to get a matching center with them. I got my 805 for $375 off eBay from someone who didn't list much information and hadn't sold a thing for years. He paid retail for it a few years ago too (huge loss from $1100 ) but when I got it it was in the original box, had everything included, there wasn't a fingerprint or visual imperfection at all. I saved myself over $400 from buying new. I think you should take the risk and go for it (especially when you're dealing with Amazon).

Lucky you!

I'm just such a pessimist.

I was also looking at PolkDirect on eBay, too. Refurbished products from the manufacturer always seem to be in good condition.

Almost everything I've bought is used (including movies). Like I said, returning the products should be the last thing on your mind. They were inspected to make sure they work right and look okay. You can be an even bigger pessimist by saying that you're sure the world's going to end today and that the internet is killing people and leaving life-long scars or whatever. Buying them used enables you to buy a matching center for the a little less than buying both new. I don't see why you wouldn't, especially with a good return policy. Even buying new or buying on the internet or breathing or shopping or using a computer or driving or flying or walking ect. is dangerous.

Actually, I buy my air new.

Have you ever had a negative experience buying used?

I have been watching them on eBay and they're going for, on average, $215.27 (shipping included). I will more-than-likely buy from them, unless Amazon has them for $100 a piece again! Come on, Amazon!

$215 each???? That's very overprice considering they were $60 each from Fry's a few months ago. I wish I would've jumped on them back then. If I didn't like them, I could always resell them for a large profit. You know, you could always buy one and see how it turns out so you can see how you like it.
