Default 2nd row setup

I searched the forums for this and even Google but could not find any solid info on this topic. I always have a lot of people over to watch movies. I have seating for 6-7 people (sofa:3or4, loveseat:2, chair:1) The love seat is perpendicular to the right main speaker and in line with it (slightly out of its firing range and the right surrounds firing range). This makes for a dull movie experience when compared to the other seats in the room and one stiff neck at the end. I do not have enough room to move the giant mains farther apart (not even an inch, due to pool table).

I was thinking of placing the loveseat/chair behind the sofa (main seating/sweet spot) on raised platform (14-18 inches). I'm thinking 2 feet of leg room from cushion to back of sofa. How would the speaker placement for the surrounds work if I were to do this? Calibration (YPAO)? Pros/cons?

Speakers: 5.1 (regular surrounds) (receiver is 7.2 capable, but wallet won't be for a while)

You can buy a platform bed to do the job. Cover it with carpet or anything else you like. SouthShore Furniture is the main manufacturer.

As far as calibration is concerned, it should not be a problem, particularly if you have bipolar surround speakers. The Calibration program on many new receivers work for 6 or more seating positions. You can always fine tune it manually.

I see the benefit of bipolars in this situation, but I am missing a few walls right now (unfinished basement). Anyway, I will place the loveseat in the back and raise it with a few bricks to see if I can get a good balance for the two rows. If it works out I will probably buy the platform bed for $100. It will come in handy when relatives come over to visit. I also have an old box spring that I can use with some extra plywood, which will probably cut down on vibration.

You could build a platform yourself for much less money. I built one in my old house. It was 10 feet long, 6 feet from front to back and about a foot high. The couches had 6 inch legs so it was a nice rise for the folks in the back. I had a fairly big room also. The platform cost me about 50.00 to 100.00 bucks to make. 2X4's and 1/4 " plywood, then something to cover it with.

Wow, using a platform bed as a 2nd row riser is a great idea! My wife and I have been looking around at theater seats, and haven't landed on a seating configuration / solution that we're happy with. We like the idea of theater seats, but having a single row doesn't provide enough seating. Using a sectional, or couch / loveseat combo, may compromise things too much if you're sitting on the side.

I think I'll need to take some measurements.
