Universal Studios Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) - August 2, 2019

Via Aint It Cool News:
The FAST/FURIOUS franchise may be getting a little bit bigger after FAST & FURIOUS 6. I already told you how this summer's installment will lead into #7, and that will continue moving the core crew forward into at least one more sequel, but with the story arc for The Rock's character of Luke Hobbs wrapping up, why not spin-off from the series to give him his own set of stories to be told?

That's the thinking over at Universal right now as Dwayne Johnson revealed to Empire doing press for G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. The goal is for the the Hobbs to be built up enough over this next film that "possibly" he would get his own solo branch of the F&F Universe after #6. One could also guess that Gina Carano, who looks to be partnered up with him for this coming chapter, might also go along for the ride, where they could eventually branch her off and the brand of FAST/FURIOUS can expand even further.

That sounds interesting. I'm a huge fan of the fast and furious franchise and can't wait for the sixth one in may and I wouldn't mind seeing a spin off of sorts to the rocks character Luke Hobbs that would be something.

This. He brought the Franchise back to life and hopefully he does get his spinoff.

I love the idea, and I really hope Gina Carano comes along for the ride!

p.s. - I just messaged mod to add (Fast & Furious spin-off) to thread title, as a lot of people won't know what "Luke Hobbs" is.

I'm all for it. It'll be good to have The Rock in his own action franchise, finally.

Here's the tentative poster. It's also co-starring a Gatling gun. I'm in. Sounds good.

I'm okay with this.

Dwayne is already growing as an action star.

I've been waiting for him to take his place as the big Hollywood action star ever since Rundown. After a detour through kiddie-flick-land, he seems back on track.

The moment i walked out of the cinema after watching the awesome Fast 5, i said to my cohort Shlomo, "Johnson get's his own spin-off film. He's got to, he's bad-ass!" and a couple of years later Team Universal are trying to make it happen! Awesome!

I recently caught the F&F6 ad on TV, and thought "Cool, they're showing the GI Joe trailers already!"--Well, with the military, and tanks and planes, and explosions, and all.
I thought something was amiss when it said "May" (May??), and then found out this was supposed to be the summer's big F&F sequel.

Not being a core F&F fan, I can be excused my reaction of "The HELL?? "
It started as just a movie about hot-wiring cool cars (and ostensibly a remake thereof). That was IT.
But Universal has now attached their studio-icon brandname to it: Universal wants to follow the rules of Warner, Fox and Disney, and have the audience know them for a set of marketable trademark franchises that only their studio is responsible for. In Uni's case, that would be the Monsters, Jurassic Park, the Despicable Me minions, and Fast & Furious sequels.
Which means it won't be about stealing cool cars anymore, it'll be about...whatever the heck summer action movie they want it to be about, just so long as you good consumers know that it came from Universal. (Ie., "Whenever Universal brings you action, it'll be Fast & Furious!")

I realize the term "Jump the Shark" applies to TV, so there must be some term for when a studio throws out the purity of the franchise concept just to sell the studio as the star of the picture. And like most jumped sharks on TV, that's when it's usually the beginning of the end.

I used to confuse Dwayne Johnson with Vin Diesel all the time, and then I found an easy way to tell them apart:
Dwayne is the one who owns a sense of humor.

(Also helped to tell him apart from Jason Statham.)

I understand the money part, but honestly I don't understand the need for this. I mean we already have the F&F franchise. Why do we need more? What would they call it?

Team Universal?

"Luke Hobbs?"

"Who are you?"

"Jason Bourne. Marty McFly's in trouble. He needs your help."

"Where is he?"

"Jurassic Park."

Well, that was my point--To Universal, it IS a franchise.

The whole studio belief is like that scene from Repo Man where the characters buy big generically branded cans of "FOOD".
In this case, Universal wants "ACTION MOVIE" for the May/June slot every year, but they need a brandname to stick in our head. Put it under "Fast & Furious" label, or any configuration thereof, and we--the audience who they wonder how to persuade into a film--thinks, "Oh, I see the label 'Fast & Furious'! It must be an action movie coming out in summer, with lots of fast car chases and stuff blowing up!"
This way, we march down to a theater to buy a product, since it's easier than going through all the rigors of figuring out who this "Jack Reacher" is that Tom Cruise is playing, or this "Salt" whoever that Angelina Jolie is playing. After all, would you use a tissue paper that wasn't "Kleenex", use a copier that wasn't "Xerox", or drink a cola that wasn't Coke or Pepsi?

That's the hardest part for studios, you know, coming up with an idea to make a movie, and then convincing someone to go see it--So it's always best to make movies that have their ideas pre-prepared that people already know, and you don't have to make them yourself.

you could not be more wrong. This series has done the complete opposite of Jumping the Shark. It has kept itself fresh and exciting and actually gotten BETTER by its evolution. Rather than just rehashing "hotwiring cool cars" or whatever as you put it (which would have gotten old), it expanded its universe and grew beyond that simple premise. 5 was the best yet, and 6 looks to give it a run for its money.
