Arrow PS3 pros and cons, help.

I'm planning on buying a PS3 and I'm not entirely convinced. People say it's a great BD player, is it? I'm only seeing a few games I'd like to get. Also, it has DTS-HD MA from what I see, but, is that fresh out the box or through a firmware update? And if it is through a firmware update am I going to have to put on LPCM like the BDP-S300. Like the title says what are the pros and the cons. Any help decided will be much appreciated.

-Carlos

P.S. Selling my 360 to buy it, anyone interested in buying a 360 send me a PM for details.

Yes it is, for a low-end BD player. You can't beat the load times at all.

If you get a brand new PS3 it may have the firmware update already installed, but even if your PS3 isnt connected to the internet updating the firmware is too simple not to do.

I cannot speak to this, but I wish I could (for my own sake).

Shame. Which 360 do you have?

Just what do you mean by that? The PS3 is one of THE best BD players out there. I certainly wouldn't call it "low-end".

for the price very few cons, it decodes all the HD codecs internally but doesnt bitstream... but thats not an issue unless you just have to see your DTSMA light on your receiver.
i have a samsung 1500 as well as the ps3... the ps3 has better pq. I have a couple of games for it but im not a huge gamer. the remote on the 1500 has a High WTF were they thinking factor too. the load times are much faster on the ps3.
when i first got it i was concerned about it not measuring up but the unit keeps impressing me more and more... to get higher pq and performance you would have to spend 3 times as much.
the only other con i can think of is it doesnt look like a piece of stereo equipment it looks like a gaming console.

ricshoe as a former business owner i love your quote about democracy... it could be said about business too.

yes, Dts-HD Master decoding was enabled in a previous firmware update...not sure if that specific firmware comes with a new PS3 when you buy it but its easy to update (wifi or wired) and doesn't take very long.

Also you would have to set the PS3 to LPCM just like the S300, only the S300 could not handle Dts-HD MA like the PS3 does.

If you play games, the PS3 is a great choice as you can do a ton with it. But if you're looking to have your Receiver display "TrueHD" or "Dts-HD MA" you may want to look elsewhere such as a S350 or Panny BD35.

Myself, I have two PS3's which for the price can do so much more than a standalone. But to each his own.

Oh! And one more thing. I'm using HDMI for audio and component for video. My projector doesn't support HDMI, but that will change soon. So for now I'm using component. Does the PS3 come with a component cable?

I would disagree. It is not a low end BD player.

Could I use HDMI for audio only at the same time I use component for video?

PS3 will be the best bang for your buck. No BD player will surpass it at that price range. But is it the best out of them all? In terms of PQ and AQ, it isn't. Such players from higher end companies like Pioneer, Marantz, and Denon will provide you much better picture and audio. How much of a difference that is and is it worth the extra $1000+, I leave that up to you.

PS3 will be having many great games coming out for it. Specifically, ones you should look out for are Little Big Planet (which is out now), Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and some already available titles (IMHO, MGs4 is the single greatest story driven game every invented. But if you plan on buying this, I suggest you try to catch up on MGS 1 - 3, preferably playing them yourselves as simple plot summaries cannot do justice to this complex story presented by Kojima - yes if you haven't noticed, I just finished playing MGS3 nd begun playing MGS4, and I'm telling you right now, the story is so deep, you feel like this shouldv'e won an award, and also uncharted: Drakes of Fortune, and maybe Warhawk).

Fresh out of the box, the firmware for DTS-HDMA is an old one so you will get it but only through LPCM. PS3 cannot bitstream.

IMHO if you don't want to spend a lot of money, than I suggest getting a PS3 as it is the best bang for your buck. Although there are cons, the pros heavily outweigh them (and im not exagerating on the heavily part either). Good luck on your choice.

and btw i highly recommend the ps3 as both a BD player and a gaming console...its not the best BD player out there but you'd have to spend at least twice as much to get a better player and for games its simply sick...check out Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4(catch up on your Metal Gear-ology first), Resistance 1 and 2, Little Big Planet, Warhawk, Killzone 2, and Motorstorm games, just to name a few awesome PS3 exclusives

I currently own a PS3, BDP-S300 and I just ordered a BDP-S550. I am paying $250.00 for the S550 and based on what I have read will be getting better PQ and AQ than I currently do from the PS3 or S300. It will do a better job at upconverting your standard DVDs as well. I just wanted to give you my thoughts because the PS3 following will never turn you away from the PS3. If you do plan on playing games with it than yes the PS3 is a good value. I found that I could not go back to the PS3 controller after the 360 as it is not as comfortable for me. You may want to try it out if you have not already.

The PS3 is an amazing player. It has fast load times, superb PQ, easy firmware updatability(is that a word?!), plays games is you want, passes the latest audio codecs via LPCM.

Disadvantages.....very few.....all mentioned above.

Low-end, as in cheaper.

Low in price.

Inexpensive.

Affordable.

Not high-end.

That wasn't a negative gentlemen, I wouldn't speak ill of my primary BD player.
