Default Apple at it again...

Basically short story is that a while ago one developer produced an app to download podcasts OTA. Apple rejected it citing that it duplicates itunes podcast functionality(!). Apparently in Apple world there can be only one app, and as long as it's made by Apple you can have (pay) for it.

Now, in iphone firmware 2.2 they include exactly the same app. So, as long as Apple duplicates itunes all is ok.
That is really low. I'm glad Apple has minimal share on comp market. Given their predatory tactics what'd happen to the software world it they had MS power isn't not too hard to imagine.

apple has to re-coup the cost of R&D, so it has to protect its applications. that's why there are patents for inventors. if i invent the next alternative fuel source i need to make sure i get paid for it, not so some joe can copy it and make the money that i should be making off it.

I think you misunderstood what happened. In this case it was Apple who pretty much copied Joes app.
Joe never violated Apple's patents. He just wrote an app and Apple refused to approve it (which is wrong at first place, to have a single company controlling all apps for the platform) because they were developing something like that already at best, or worse, they took his idea.

MS owns windows exactly as apple owns iphone platform. If it was MS doing the same thing they'd be already in the court for that. For now Apple is rather insignificant, but never the less they suck for doing that.

Unfortunately this isn't the end of it. Knowing Apple and looking at current situation, there is no way you can come up with a really good app and not risk it pirated by apple in the same way.

Actually who cares? Don't submit ideas to companies without their consent. If you do, you don't have a leg to stand on, because there is always a chance that two ideas can be similar. Doesn't Apple have a right to refuse an idea? What makes that morally wrong? It's like that Apple ad "you took a bite, now you have to pay me $10 million!"

Anyone who develops for iphone cares.
And it wasn't an idea that was submitted, but the application. I guess you donno how apps development for iphone works?
The way things are if you write an app for iphone you have to submit to Apple first, for approval, allegedly so they make sure it's not harmful. Practically, well you see what's happening.

And per-se apple didn't refuse, but took the idea. Or at least tanked the app so their own would have no competition. They could simply put their own app out and compete with that guys product, it that something unheard of?
But no, it's simpler to kill competition. And what competition that one guy was to Apple to begin with?
Anyway, in my opinion this is unfair competition and back then MS got grilled for similar stuff adn it was well deserved.
