Default do I need hd tv to use blu-ray?

Can we view hi def blu-ray on our hi-def t.v. without upgrading our Direct t.v. to hi def? Sorry if this is an old question. Just wondering if we will get blu-ray or dvd for x-mas.

Yes. You do not need to change your Direct TV to get a Blu-ray player.

You just answered your own question. You don't have to upgrade your Direct TV service as it has no relations to your tv or bluray player

yes, if you have a bluray player and an hdtv you can view blurays in HD. direct tv has nothing to do with the "signal chain" since it is a separate component (unless for whatever reason you feed your bluray into the directtv box instead of directly into the tv?)

As answered above, you can enjoy the quality of Blu-ray in your HD TV. Your Direct TV hookup is a separate independent video source. HDMI from a Blu-ray player to your HDTV and you are set.

Not quite so.

I do not have an HDTV but Blu-ray plays much, much better on my TV than a DVD. Plus my DVD's have been up scaled enough that the picture I now have on my re-projection TV is really great, enough so, that I feel I don't need to spend the $$$ right now to get an HDTV.

Sorry, If you're watching Blu rays on a standard def TV then you're not getting a better picture. Your standard def TV only has standard # of lines of resolution. You will see a major difference when you upgrade to an HDTV.

I agree I will see a difference when I upgrade to an HDTV.

Mine is an HD ready TV. it does not have HDMI hook up. I connect by way of component. And it does upscale from a 480i to a 480p and I did notice a difference in picture quality.

I started out the same way... but now having an HDTV, I wonder how I made it through those days.

In addition to my 768p plasmas (main sets), I have a 480p plasma in our bedroom. Though I've not watched BD on it, I do get HD cable, and I must say that the HD picture quality is so much better than even the best digital station (or DVD), there's no comparison. Based on this, I have to say that you CAN enjoy the benefits of BD on a non-HD set (at least on mine ).
