Did anybody see this, and if so, is it any good? I'm aware of the extremely high reviews, but the trailer didn't really work for me. But I thought Blockers looked bad last year, and I ended up enjoying that.

This was a netflix produced movie... what is the story as to why this one got a theatrical run (a REAL theatrical run) and now a physical media release? Either way, i really hope this can continue with future netflix movies. Sadly it is underperforming at the box office, which doesn't inspire confidence in future netflix theatrical runs. I saw it, it isn't bad. I didn't find it as good as the reviews would have you believe, but enjoyable.

I absolutely loved this movie, it’s a better, non-creepy version of Superbad. Also one of the best soundtracks in a long while.

Correction.

Here in the states is under Annapurna Pictures (Fox releases on home video).

It is a Netflix film internationally (I think France).

Ah... so it wasn't financed by Netflix the way the ones that don't get traditional releases are?

I just wish i could buy copies of certain netflix movies!

I was very disappointed with Booksmart. I liked the trailer a lot but the actual film just wasn't very funny IMO. It just didn't feel very realistic or grounded, and I wasn't very sympathetic to the characters. There's no real stakes for anyone in the movie. Just a bunch of rich kids who are all going to good colleges who are mildly upset they didn't have enough fun in high school.

It wasn't boring though, and the humor might be more up your alley so your mileage may vary.

While I liked the movie and found it slightly funny and amusing at times I must agree that there was no charisma or wit coming from these characters. Even at times the two leads could seem just a tad obnoxious.

An Annapurna release that isn't a Blu/DVD/HD combo pack. Never thought I'd see that day.

Day one release here. Saw it this afternoon and nearly broke my rib cage from how hard I was laughing.

Obviously when it comes to comedy, opinions will vary, but I loved Booksmart. One of the best comedies of the year, if not the last few years. Great writing, and casting.

Edit: This is what I wrote in the movie thread.

The movie is also supported by a pretty great soundtrack, that was used very nicely to enhance several scenes.

I won't give anything away, but there's some really cool things they do in this movie that really separates it from your average comedy. The swimming pool scene in particular is my favorite. It's beautifully filmed, and it runs the gamut of emotions.

I wouldn't say this movie reinvents anything in the comedy world, but Olivia's Wilde's debut film certainly breathes some fresh air into it. It's a hilarious movie, but also one with some genuinely-earned emotional moments. I didn't know what to expect with this. The trailer looked amusing, but didn't quite hook me. Now having seen it, I'd consider it an instant-classic, and the most fun I've had in a theater in a long time.

5/5

It wasn't a Netflix produced movie. They got the rights to it internationally.

Are Fox Blu-ray's usually region free? It seems there's a pre-order for a DVD copy over here in the UK but no sight of a Blu-ray. If I import it, what are the chances it'll work? Thanks

Pretty good chance it's region free, especially since Disney owns Fox now.

I liked this movie quite a bit. Saying that, it was UAR's third release (all this year) and third straight underperformer. Two of them, BOOKSMART and MISSING LINK deserved to make money. The other, THE HUSTLE, not so much. I mostly like Megan's taste in material, but she doesn't know what she's doing from a marketing standpoint or greenlighting production budgets (see VICE, among others). CHILD'S PLAY, BAD TRIP, and the animated ADDAMS FAMILY should have some mild success, but they really need BOND 25 to go gangbusters next year to keep it afloat since it markets itself.
