If the PC has the proper hardware, absolutely!
As for the whole storage thing, this is a tabu subject here as ripping is deemed illegal.

you can.... however.

You're gonna need (to get the same features as a real bluray player)
1. a great graphics card with HDMI output.
2. good software to run the blu's out of the HDMI port (no, not all support HDMI output. you may need Cyberlink PowerDVD -8-)
3. a good processor in your pc (at LEAST a Pentium Dual-Core 2.0GHZ), preferrably a Core2.
4. Next, you'll need the software to backup your blu's onto your hard drive (I know of only 1 good program that actually works, it's 50$)

Dude, you might as well just buy a BluRay player. Best Buy sells an Insignia brand bluray player for 199$! Even the 300$ sony's will be more efficient and cost effective.

Bluray is tricky on pc's still. It's not JUST about the hardware, the software to run blu out of an HDMI port is 99$. But of course, like i said, this is if you truly want the same experience.

PS. Burn-In really will be rare on a modern Plasma with your pc unless you keep it on the same screen for over an hour.

Good luck finding a 40$ graphics card with !HDMI! output.

the dude said he wanted the same quality and features off the pc as if he actually bought a bluray standalone player.... "with all the same features as a stand alone player ie sony ps3 etc"

You WILL NOT get the same quality without the HDMI output and software to support the port.

Look to spend about 150$ for a decent card with HDMI that'll give you the same video quality as a bluray player.

peace!

Correction - you can find the ATI 4550 that supports 7.1 audio through HDMI for 60.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121281 you don't have to spend $150.00 for a video card. All of the software that I know of (cyberlink, arcsoft, and windvd 9) support HDMI. I've been doing things with my HTPC that the PS3 can't, so it can be done. The HTPC is one of the best upconveters out there - they are very hard to beat. The video cards also support 1080p/24fps. Software will cost you between $70.00 and 100.00 (the best one being the 70.00 option IMHO). BD drives also come with OEM software but I recommend buying full versions.

Drawbacks - can it bitstream (only with a Xonar card and the drivers are buggy). But it will convert TrueHD and DTS-HD Master to LPCM (samething) to the receiver. Your software will downres any BD audio that's above 48khz/16bit to that level - but you can upconvert any audio signal within Windows Vista by setting you output resolution to 48khz/24bit or above - if your audio card is capable (most recent ones are).

So can you get PS3 level operations from a HTPC yes, and more . There are plenty of people on this forum that can help you - I consider Dadkins a HTPC pro, and I'm no slouch myself ! Yes, it can be done!

No, not a pro by any stretch. Thanks though!
I have two VAIO laptops but I have no idea what the video cards cost - one is a 7600GT, the other is a 8400GT.
Both have HDMI and they do work(tested down the street at a neighbor's house).

My laptops do ok...

One thing I/we can do that no PS3 or stand alone can do, burn Blu-ray discs.
I can do another operation, but the Mods get annoyed when it gets mentioned.
Think about the sound Velcro makes when you open it.
