HP Desktop and Onkyo 606?

I have a HP desktop as a HTPC in my entertainment stand and i recently got a Onkyo 606 reciever so i output through the HDMI on my computer to the Onkyo and the audio is weird it takes like 10 seconds to catch up to the movie playing and then it cuts in and out all the time. What do i do to resolve this. I don't want to keep using my optical cable if i don't have to. Also I have windows vista 64bit.

Is your system a true 64 bit system, or did you just update a 32 bit system with Vista Home or Ultimate 64? Make sure any drivers you're using for your audio card are 64 or 32 depending on your system.

The most obvious answer to your symptoms is processes running - when playing back BD's you need to shut down all applications and any processes like Anti-Virus programs and firewalls that will affect your output signal. Cutting in and out is a key indication that this is what's happening - every time a processes starts, it slows down the CPU just enough to affect the sound output signal. Optical is a lot faster than HDMI (light vs. 'trons) so I assume you're not having problems with your optical output.

Problems like this occur in systems with minimum RAM configurations as well. You really need a minimum of 2gb for Vista Home, 3 for Business and Ultra 32, and 4 for Business and Ultimate 64.

You also need to make sure all applicable options in your Sound Options are set correctly - just redirecting the audio isn't enough. Open the Properties window under your HDMI out setting in Sound Options, then the Advanced tab - make sure that Exclusive Mode is selected. Supported Formats - check the applicable output setting for your receiver, and that your Sampling rates match your receiver.
