Default Question about HDMI cables

Ok, this is going to sound like a stupid question.

There are a few different types of HDMI. Are there different types of HDMI cables as well?

For instance: A monster HDMI cable, that is HDMI 1.3 cabaple, can that cable be inserted into HDMI 1.1 or 1.2 machines?

I think so, but i just want to confirm this.

Thanks guys

I have run an HDMI cable from my PS3 (1.3) to my receiver (1.2) and my mom's TV, which is about 2-3 years old (so that's probably 1.1).

Yes, you can use HDMI 1.3 cables for HDMI 1.1 connections. There's no physical difference between cabels for HDMI 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3. They have only passed different tests. HDMI 1.3 work at a higher frequency so the cable need to work for that. The longer the cable are, the more difficult it is for a high frequency signal to pass intact. HDMI-cables do not have any upper limit to the length in the specifications, it depends upon the cable and the tests it has passed.

It is possible to use a HDMI 1.1 cable for HDMI 1.3 transfer (PS3 is the first CE-product for HDMI 1.3, receivers coming to the summer) but you can't be certain about it.

In the case of HDMI (and other things) it is the processing equipment on either end and not the transmission medium that ultimately limits the amount of data that can be transmitted in a unit of time.

I have a cable question too so I'll just drop it here.
I just got a Receiver w/ HDMI ins so I went to switch the sound setting on my PS3 to HDMI but I am prompted w/ an Error "This device cannot use HDMI for audio output".

I called Tech support and was told it's possible the HDMI cable I was using is for video only. Is there such thing as a video only HDMI cable?

I tested another cable from work with the same results. The only thing I can guess is I'm running HDM to DVI out from the receiver to the TV, I guess it could be messing w/ something. Going to have a friend bring his PS3 over to test if it's the Unit.

Its possible your reciever only has HDMI passthrough. In this case it only has the HDMI input to switch the video source through the reciever. And cannot decode sound over HDMI.

it is a STR-DG1000 7.1 reciever. Although posible I really don't think this is the case.

That reciever ( STR-DG1000 7.1) should decode sound over HDMI. Check your setting on the PS3 for HDMI audio. (bitstream or linear). That should fix your issue.

This is the Error I get when I go to the PS3 setting. Same result nomater if it's set to Bitstream or Linear.

But my main question here is, has anyone ever heard of a Video only HDMI cable? Is this something made up by Tier 1 suport to get me off the phone?

I have never heard of an HDMI cable that does video only, Maybe thats what some people here on the boards are talking about when they find these cheapy $20.00 cables. I have one Monster and one Acoustic Research HDMI cables and have no problems. You might want to try another cable just to rule that out of your trouble shooting equation.

Try using HDMI for video only. See if that passes through. Then try it with audio turned on.

There is also the fact that you may need to do a soft reset of the PS3.

I am currently useing it for Video and Optical for audio as the HDMI isn't letting me. When I try to turn it on is when I get the Error. I have tried rebooting both the PS3 and Receiver.

(I sware if it's not one this it's another w/ me. I'm pretty good w/ AV equipment, somehow I just get the screwy stuff. Example, the brand new replacement Receiver Sony sent me, the center chanel dosn't work, I have to send it in for repair)

Then I say return the receiver and get a new one of the same model or get it from a different retailer. Or get a different model altogether.

Errors in manufacturing does happen.
