Exclamation Can anybody help me? Quick Question?

I was wondering what is the rating for a normal DVD 480i, 720p 1080i,1080p. There are a couple of new Movies that just cam out today that I would love to see on BD, but I don't think there available in that format. They are Children of men & The Good Shepherd.

All 35mm and 70mm film is converted to 1080P/24 Digital format. Once that is done then the 1080P/24 source material is transferred to DVD 480I quality. BLU-RAY motion pictures are all in 1080P/24. Today there is only a few hundred titles in BLU-RAY but in a year or two there should be over a 1,000.

T.V.=SONY XBR3 46 INCH
BLUE-RAY PLAYER=PS3
RECEIVER=PIONEER ELITE
Children of men is currently available on HD-DVD and the Good Shepherd is coming out in HD-DVD on April 3rd. Both of these movies are currently only available on HD-DVD in 1080P quality (or 480I DVD). Universal studios is the only studio that currently does not release on BLU-RAY. You may want to get a HD-DVD player if you have to have these movies. Many experts think that the HD-DVD format may die in a few years or possible coexist with BLU-RAY for a while.

You mean how close 480i is to 1080p?

Ammm.. 1080p theoretically lets you enlarge things 8 times more than 480i.

So a 32" can become a 92" so 1080p is much sharper.

In practice a DVD on a 92" will look kinda soft.

So a rough rating (16:9 shape):

scanning lines = area/magnification

480i = 1x/1x
720p = 3.5x/2x
1080i = 6x/2.5x
1080p = 8x/3x

That's the theoretical max. difference
Not all "1080p" images look 1080peish!

What is the model number of the Pioneer Elite? If the Pioneer Elite has a HDMI output I would play the 480I DVD’s in that player since it most likely is a better DVD player then the PS3.

In theory the PS3 would be better quality since you are keeping everything digital while using HDMI. HDMI is the best connection to use.

Your display will up convert the 480I DVD to 1080P. Upconvert does not look as good as true HDTV signals.

Doesn't your Sony XBR3 resize 480 to fill the screen? That's an upconversion. Upconversion of 480 into a 1080 or 720 panel has to occur somewhere. So it can be on the disc player, on some receivers, or on the display itself. If you have more than one choice you use the component does it the best. Currently, if you use the PS3 to play DVDs, it occurs on the display.
