Chief Editor of Wired on Today Show This Morning

Had the Today show on this morning, and they did a piece on a bunch of items (from make-up to appliances/electronics to yard equipment) regarding when was the time to try to salvage/repair them or when was the time to junk them.

For the electronics portion, the Chief Editor of Wired Magazine was the guest. They rambled through a bunch of items (iPod, digital cameras, etc). First, they came to an old TV set. He said that upgrade to a cheaper digital set, but getting an HD TV was 'not necessary', especially in this economy.

This leads into his view of a DVD player. He said that now is the perfect time to get rid of a poorly functioning DVD player. His reasoning? He said there's no use buying a new one because downloads were the next big thing over the next year or two.(!?!?!?) Didn't even mention a blu-ray player as a replacement option.

Sometimes it seems like the entire 'establishment' is against Blu-ray. Your thoughts?
