I have it in my wishlist, and will be getting it soon. However, I have not seen any reviews. This release is not from a major studio, and I doubt that reviewers are getting free copies. No reviews that I am aware of for this movie.

I received it through amazon.com last week. To tell you the truth I can't tell the difference between the last DVD edition and the new blu-ray. With the sound you have a choice between Dolby Digital 5.1 and mono. No DTS-HD or or Dolby TrueHD. Playing my previous DVD of Black Christmas my PS3 already upconverts the 480i to 1080p anyway and it looks the same.
I haven't checked the special features so I can't say definitively that this is the same as previous editions, but if you're looking for great sound...this isn't your thing. The picture is 1.78:1 in 1080p but the picture didn't seem any cleaner or crisper than earlier editions. I'm hoping someone more competent will release a blu-ray of this later. The sound effects are going to waste without lossless audio. Great movie (one of the scariest of all time in my opinion) but definitely not an impressive blu-ray. If you don't own any edition of this film yet or don't own a blu-ray player that sufficiently upconverts to either 1080i or 1080p this purchase might make sense. Otherwise, save your money. |

I have it and it is exactly like the last DVD except that it may fill up you're TV screen w/o having to use zoom. I posted a review on this website, but need to revise as I stated that the last DVD doesn't have the digital surround 5.1 but it does. If you don't have the DVD then by all means pick it up, but if you do have the DVD you can buy something else with the $$$.

There are several reasons not to buy the Blu-Ray if you already own the DVD.
A) Single-layer disc and the film is so compressed that it is only allotted something like 12GB on the disc. B) The audio is the same lossy track from the DVD. C) The fleshtones look very red. Much redder than the the previous DVD. ***Also, the owner of the print used is very vocal about the film and he says if the film does well, it may receive a proper presentation - lossless audio and no doubt dual-layer disc, so we won't have the current compression problem. So, I would say don't buy this if you own the DVD. If you don't own the film in any way, then buy this blu-ray. Or if you find the film used, or in the bargin bin, grab it. It is most certainly the most overlooked and underrated film that was a slasher film before slasher was a genre. And this works better than every slasher out there, with the possible exception of Halloween. |
