Default PS3 media streaming

I stream my music from my computer to my PS3. orgionally I had a portable USB hard drive connected to my computer and i was streaming music from my computer to the ps3... I found the sound well lets say a bit lacking.
I ended up adding another 750 GB internal hard drive to my computer and dumped all my wav files on it... needless to say i noticed a huge jump in sound quality! im loving it but i cant help but wonder why?
is it because the drive spins faster (7200 vs 5200 on the portable drive) or because the new drive connects via an IEDE cable rather than USB? ( faster data transfer?)

What kind of sound card are you running in your PC?

no sound card.... intergrated... music is streamed digitally through eithernet to the ps3. am i wrong or would a sound card only benefit the sound coming out of my pc speakers?
im talking about sound quality out of the ps3 not the computer speakers ... the only change to the computer was adding a second internal storage drive.

I was going to buy another computer and use this one as a dedicated audio server and get a soundcard .... but now im getting cd quality sound out of the PS3 when i stream... before when using the portable drive for whatever reason it sounded like i was listening to Mp3 through my ps3.

that's weird. Try plugging the usb drive directly to the ps3 and play from there. And try copying the wav file to the ps3 internal hd and play from there. See what they sound like now.

ive tried hooking the external drive to the ps3 but the ps3 doesnt have an indexing system and with 600+ gb of wav files it aint gonna work... the external drive is now just a backup anymore. ive tried dumping a few wav files on the ps3 for comparison they sound the same as if i am streaming... i guess i should just count my blessings and be happy.
