PS3 Trophies to be mandatory from January 2009 - Blu-ray Forum

Earlier this week VideoGamer.com received a tip from an anonymous source within the UK video game industry that, from January 2009 onwards, all newly released PS3 titles will be required to support the PS3 Trophy system.

Today a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson confirmed that this information is accurate, stating: "Yes from Jan 09 all games must have trophies."

This news is sure to be met very positively by PS3 gamers who are currently having to put up with sporadic Trophy support from this winter's biggest releases. Mandatory Trophy support will also put an end to post release Trophy patches that force gamers to replay games to earn the Trophies.

Glad to hear it! I bought my wife a used copy of Lego Indy and all she has done is gripe because of no trophies.

Good.

I mean, I love trophies but I've always hated how Sony came up with this system so late. There's still a whole list of games I have I'd like to have trophies for... but it's not gonna happen. This is good news.

I know that. I was going to get RE5 for the 360 and Ps3 but now that trophies are confirmed for PS3 no need for the 360 version. the 360 makes people think its the cheaper system but its not the PS3 is cheaper than the 360. M$ is making it sseem that the recession is worse than it really is. if the recession is soooo bad but you can afford a 360 why not pay a little more and get a PS3 which is a dream machine

**** yeah, I'm a major trophy *****, I'll probably be the only one who'll get a Platinum in GTA IV, I want a Platinum in Warhawk, but that one is not gonna happen unfortunately.

This is great news! I wonder if they'll make a mandatory patch update for the games that don't have them? I'm sure it'd take programmers like what, 30 minutes to port the Achievements over?

Im betting most just dont care.. look at namco.. Eternal Sonata? Soul calibur? I mean come on, Eternal Sonata had been on 360 for a year and they were too lazy to port over the achievements.. although Im glad they didnt cuz they were a pain in the ass to get.

Soul Calibur by all means should have had them.. but since the game only did so-so in sales.. meh.

Glad sony got on board, but its gonna be 2009 soon.. years later.. little late to the party.

It's all a tempest in a teacup. By the end of 2009 most won't even remember that the early titles didn't have trophies, let alone care.

Good to see Sony finally making it mandatory, though.

Trophies suck! They're a huge waste of development time and they can spend that time giving us a better story, longer game, better graphics.

it's only for games to come out AFTER Jan 2009 silly man.
