Default Restoring to a Different PS3???

My 60gb PS3 suddenly stopped reading disks and I'm thinking of upgrading to an 80gb model.

If I back up the 60 will I be able to restore it to the newer 80? I don't want to lose all of my Rock Band downloads and purchased games, etc.

Thanks for any help.

You can put your account on it and will be able to download again anything you bought. I dont know if you can use the restore option on it and then "restore" it to a new PS3.

My PS3 60GB better not die for many many years. I did not buy it to last a couple years only. None of my previous machines ever died on me, so why should the PS3 be any different ?

My original 60gb started to freeze when playing games and sure enough when I purchased a new 80gb the freezing stopped. The backup from my 60 would not restore to the new 80. So I have the backup for when the 60 comes back from repair but in the mean time I had to redownload all my songs again. This kinda sucks.

You must have did it wrong or a recent firmware update addressed this or something -- because I took a backup of my 60GB and restored it to my new 80GB without any problems. When you choose the restore option on the new pS3 is recognizes that the backup was done on a different PS3 and says something....can't remember what exactly....but in any case it worked just fine for me.

So to the OP, yes it should work without issues based on my experience.

Except that certain game save data WON'T be able to be transferred. In my case, when my unit went for repair, my backup of the old system would not allow my 'Rock Band' characters/scores/DLC to be re-installed. I had to start it all from scratch (without having to pay for any DLC again, just d/loaded them all again). Many game publishers are starting to copy-protect save data to keep people from cheating through games by using a friends game save data and/or downloaded game data.
