Default Help picking up new receiver

Hello, I am looking to upgrade my receiver. You can see what I have in my sig. I want something with a couple of HDMI ports and that can upconvert.

I was looking into this
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR806...5152881&sr=8-1

Any other recommendations in that price range?

Thats what I am going to recommend. TX-SR806. I have the 805 and love it. The 805 supposedly has the better audio from the DACs and the 806 has the better video, so its a toss-up.

I wanted a receiver that up-converted as well, until I got one (Onkyo TX-SR875). While it does do some things well, it's not magical or even something I've used more than a dozen times. My opinion is that you are not missing out on anything and if I were to do it all over again I would base my decision on sound quality. Not saying the 875 sounds bad but sound quality should be the most important factor when choosing receivers.

Of course it's what you want so I would look at receivers with REON or look at separate scalers for that duty. Just keep in mind your TV is going to have the final say in terms of PQ.

Have a definite look at the Yamaha RX-V1800.

I'd recommend mine (see sig), but it's only available in Canada.

You might want to also look at the Denon 2808. That's a quality AVR.

i also want to purchase this receiver.
people are going to tell you that the 805 will probably sound better because they read the dac specs, and will tell you that the sound quality would be better than 806, which, probably is true, but i know for fact that the sound quality wont even be noticeable. the guys down at onkyo probably wanted to save some money because they probably thought the sound quality wouldnt be much of a difference! heck i heard the some fony sony receiver at best buy that was paired with some klipsch synergy 5.1 surround sound system speakers, and let me tell you it sounded amazing, and i also know that the onkyo 806 would be even better! well good luck, i will purchase the 806! i also hope you do to!

Minimo,Are you confused yet

If your looking for a reciever that up-converts the best ,then i think pioneer is where you should be looking at.

IF you ask me thats not really a big deal and shouldn't be a deal breaker for you .You should (In my opinion) be looking for the best sounding reciever .HD is HD and Blu-ray is Blu-ray.What needs up-converting?

I personally find marantz to be a warmer sound

Pioneer ,Yamaha and denon would be the 3 brands i would Recommend.
whats your budget ?
There's a lot of good deals going around my friend.

I own a Yamaha reciever and if i had to do it again i would still be owning the one i have.

Of course sound quality is very important to me, and come to think of it the upconvert is not that important, but the extra HDMI's are.

Yes but it is very ugly, and doesn't have a lot of neat features...

Yes you can see the settings on your t.v.
Thats pretty much standard for recievers these days.
I had a Marantz 7002 for a few days.
I would have to say the onscreen settings were lame,it really didn't have that many features.
It looked like it came right out of the70,s.
When i gave it back and got the one i have now, well what a difference(big improvement)

Are you implying that the Marantz receiver is less visually appealing than the Onkyo? To me, all Onkyo's look like something Emerson or Coby would make.
The 806 doesn't have Audyssey dynamic volume, that alone would make it a deal breaker for me.

longtime lurker and my first post, but given your requirements of up-conversion the 806 would be a good choice plus it includes the newest THX volume and Audyssey Dynamic Eq features that aren't on the 805, however as an 805 owner I can't help but be disappointed that Onkyo gutted the amp section and ditched the burr-browns DACs on the 806. The beauty of the 805 is that it's basically a 875 without the Reon chip, which was probably a blessing as apparently black levels are altered even in through mode on the 875.

You should be less concerned with aesthetics, lights & meaningless features. You should be concerned with sound quality. Harman Kardon AVR 354 is the way to go.
