Default Help a Cheap Guy

So Ive been looking for a decent sound system to pick up during the holidays. Problem is, im not spending over $300... (don't laugh )

So after some research, I found this

Looks good and reviews seem decent, but will this provide decent bass for a small living room? It says the sub is 225W itself if that means anything.

I just want something that will make my room shake when im watching Transformers. (if possible for this price range)

it would be an improvement over listening to sound through your tv speakers. The sub might be boomy but not earth shattering. For a small room it would be fine i think.

If you want something to get a fix for better sound this would be okay. If you want amazing sound then save up your money and get something later on down the line

Don't buy an HTIB, you'll just be dissapointed. Save your money and buy individual separates. Start with the front speakers and work your way up to surround.

i started out with a HTIB and the upgrade to 5.1 from tv speakers was immense! it is a good starting place for many people as an introduction to surround sound, i say if it is what you want then go ahead an get it and enjoy the upgrade!

If you like it enough to where you want to spend more money later on down the line and make home theater a hobby than that is cool too!

well I understand that I need to get the real thing to get great sound, but ill probably end up sticking with something like this for now. (for low cost) I would like to build a better system down the line when I can afford it.

Im still looking for a good example of how powerful the bass will be (for some reason out of the 35 reviews on bestbuy, no one gives a good review on the sub quality) The reason im asking is, the only sound system ive had was a 5.1 60W computer system and the sub had a slight rattling sound inside when the bass was heavy enough. So I really have no idea what to expect.

Thx alot for the help though, I feel better about buying this as a starter already.

have you been to the store? they usualy have these setup. Go and have a looksie, see if it is on display and ask if you can hear it.

the sub that came with my sony htib done a good job, was very boomy and satisfied me for a year and a half, it is the last piece i will be replacing now that all of my other pieces are in place in my new home theater.

That's a fine system for you. Don't listen to the naysers about the supposed evils of HTIB's.

I suggest waiting too but if not:

This THX certified HTIB will shake the room during transformers... and you dont need a big receiver.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-THX-C...7548351&sr=8-1

I had the previous model Z-680 in college and I loved them...for what you are looking for, I would at least give these a consideration.

I think it's more that most of us have been there, and could've spent our money better, and are thus trying to at least give the OP some perspective. I just had this conversation in another thread and the person thought I was bashing HTiB's, which I wasn't.

I personally have used an RCA HTiB for years- it was "good enough" for me for a long time. However, getting into BD and the best picture, I wanted to hear the best audio. I started off with the Polk RM6750 set. While it's not bad and there are folks here that love it, I still ended up wanting more.

All told, I could've applied that money towards better speakers... and that's all that folks are saying here. OP, your best bet is to go and not only listen to these, but also to some other comparable sets, and even step up to some more expensive speakers- Klipsch and Polk are two that're always present in the big box stores. Maybe you'll find that you want to build something a little bigger and better, or maybe you'll find that the HTiB is all you need.

I am not bashing HTIB either. I like most, started out with one, but now I have a tremendously better system and in retrospect, I realize I could've just saved that money and put it toward better use. It's Ultimately up to you, if you think it will cover all your needs, then go for it!

Like most, I started out with a similar set-up. I agree, the reviews look OK.
I doubt if the sub will give you the room shaking that you feel you want, but should be adequate.
I say give it a try, you can always return it per the 30 day BB policy.
It definitley will be better that the speakers on your TV.

I also have a Logitech THX 2.1 computer speaker system. It comes with a little 8" subwoofer, but it definitely suits my needs for PC use. For it being such a small sub, it packs an impressive amount of bass...but if bass is what you need look no further than this:
