Angry PS3 Crashed

My PS3 crashed, showing the green light then the flashing red light. It is 60G unit purchased nearly two years ago. Can anybody tell me how common this type of situation is? Have there been modifacations/updates since my unit was manufactured? I have not heard of many units failing thus far. I have kept it in a cool area with ample airspace around it. Also, how many of you out there employ the use of an add-on fan unit? Thnak you for your input one and all.

Had you downloaded the latest firmware before it crashed?

My theory is that the more complex a piece of technology is, the more prone to breakdown. I wonder if there is a known percentage of PS3's breaking down vs fine working ones.

Mine died as well, just this week in fact. It's a 20GB Launch unit, but I half expected this to happen. In a little over 2 years time, my PS3 had run for 15000+ hours. Since March of last year, it ran pretty much non-stop 24 hours a day/7 days a week, running the folding@home client when I wasn't using it for gaming or watching movies. Even though I figured I'd be cutting the life of my PS3 in half (at least), and knew this day would come, it's still sad.

I just bought an 80GB model, and miss the 4 USB ports more than anything else. Sometime in January, after the holiday crazyiness has settled, I'll call SONY for a coffin for my 20GB. $150 to fix this unit is a small price to pay to have a working launch unit.

Bummer! Mine is starting to freeze up sometimes when I shut it off. I have to use the power switch on the back to power it down sometimes. It's the 40 gig model, less than a year old, and it is mostly used for movies. If it dies...... I guess I'll be screwed because Sony won't honor their warranty without a receipt. I never thought to save my receipt because I've never had a problem getting a warranty honored by at least manufacture date.

That's why you need a back up PS3 or borrows someone else's.

percentage that are in service is still in the 2% I am guessing. I sent mine last week 60gb and it had the same problem of the yellow light and then flashing red. Resistance 2 got stuck inside and I did not back anything up recently, good thing is I should have mine back tuesday (provided UPS is up to the job ) now I have to take tuesday off because I cannot miss the UPS guy and have to drive to romulus to the pick up center (like 45 minute drive from where I live). Mine was also a launch, making me think about getting the 65 nanometer 80 gb version for the lower power consumption and the newer chipset. But I am getting sent my original 60 back and no refurb (serial number on playstation.com has same serial number.

From the numbers I have seen, it is WELL below the average for electronics...

That said, I am not looking forward to the day my PS3 breaks...

OTOH, my Playstation, and PS2 (PS2 was bought 6 months after launch, PS about a year after), STILL work. It is funny because I hated memory cards, so I would leave them running 24-7 and just hop the power did not go out. Litterally weeks at a time they would be running... Now they are just chillin and still in working condition... Maybe I am due?

(I am building a "shadow box" to display my PS and PS2 as triumphs of technology My Girlfriend is not happy about it...)

One year warranty from date of purchase. Otherwise, there is an approximate $150 repair fee. I say approximate because I can't remember the exact number. It's not like they are going to charge you based on the problem. It's a one fee repair that is somewhere in the $150 range.

150$ and Sony covers shipping costs. Two of which were overnight ships for me at least. Which isn't a bad deal.

My cousin didn't find his receipt for his 60GB launch PS3 that died on him. He just sent them his bank statement that showed he paid over $600 at FYE which is where he bought it from and they honored it. Depending on how you paid you might be able to do the same.
