How does VHS look on an HD TV? Always been curious about this but don't want to experiment because I'm afraid the picture will make me faint.

Not pleasant.
DVDs, without upconversion are soft at best.
VHS is a bit worse off than that.
Plus, most VHS was 4:3, recorded and bought movies.

Terrible.

We've got a fairly high-end VCR hooked up to my 50" Samsung plasma, and in the rare event that it gets used (Jay Jay the Jet Plane, Thomas the Tank Engine), if I catch my kid/wife using it I must leave the room as quickly as I can so as not to go blind. This is with a component cable signal going through my A/V receiver utilizing Faroudja's upconverting technologies, too, which from what I've read aren't bad.

Does that mean it can rewind AND fast forward? Does it even have timer programming?

This entire thread is an event, baby!

Today I saw a TV spot for a store in my area that has "the largest selection of VHS videos" in the city!

hahahahaha

When my GF moved in, she brought like 6 VHS' over. I almost shatted myself. Friends season 1 and like 4 movies (Titanic was TWO parts!).

VHS...goodness.

I (still) have a 1988 Live Entertainment VHS of Eric Clapton and Friends (yes, THAT Eric Clapton and Friends) which I put on a 720p/1080i Panasonic HDTV once. I actually think HDTV makes VHS look much worse than a regular CRT, which makes perfect sense given that HDTV displays more of the inherent flaws in VHS tape than SDTV. Amazon says it's on DVD, so I'll have to pick it up.
