Default ps3 blue ray settings!!

Hi,
Ive recently got my hands on the new 80g ps3. Ive a few technical questions!!

1. What are the best settings for watching blue ray discs! Ive a 32inch phillips pixel plus hd ready tv...not sure the model number,2 years old!

2. I watched a movie last night but was annoyed by the black bars on the top & bottom of the screen... ilooked into the settings and the choice was pan&scan or letterbox!! Is it possible to have full screen viewing?

3. on forums people refer to BD settings?? whats BD??

4. Also, if i watch standard dvds, will these be upscaled? i read that a update had to be downloaded? will i need this for my model of ps3?

Sorry if these questions are basic knowledge but im new to this

cheers for your help

BLU Ray

1. Ive got a LG 32 inch, and my PS3 setting (under video settings) are at:

- BD/DVD cinema Conversion - Automatic
- BD/DVD Upscaler - Full Screen
- BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) - Automatic
- BD 1080p 24Hz Output (HDMI) - Off (This doesn't apply to me because my TV is 720p, NOT 1080p, if your TV is 1080p, I believe they recommend to keep that off anyways, but I am not 100%)
- BD/DVD Dynamic Range Control - Off
- BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI/Optical) - Bitstream (This depends on your home theatre setup.)

2. The black bars cannot be stopped. Here's an article from this site explaining why.
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=38161

3. BD is what you call Blu-Ray. Just like how DVD means 'Digital Versatile Disc', it's just the short form.

4. Only if your going through HDMI, you will get upscaled DVD's. Using component or composite, you will NOT upconvert. Do your PS3 updates, they are good for you.

Welcome to the forums and the world of Blu

1.Without the model number it is hard to tell you how to calibrate your tv

2.check this out http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/764

3.Abbreviation for Blu Ray

4.The latest firmware version for the ps3 is 2.52, if it is a new ps3 though you will be good to go! Yes it will upscale dvd's. if you are connected with hdmi it will upscale to 1080p, if no hdmi it will upscale to 1080i
