Default Hd-dvd

NOT ONLY IS HD-DVD crashing..its crashing HARD REAL HARD...

If you are a member of Sam's Club and have any interest in picking up an HD-DVD drive for your Xbox 360, you might want to go check their prices.

It looks like some Sam's Clubs may be having a sale, knocking the price down to a piddly $72. It's not clear why or where the price is being dropped, but it is clear it's not at every Sam's Club, so call first.

Gizmodo points out the sale may be due to certain clubs no longer stocking the device anymore. A reader on our sister site points out that this is a price drop that takes place when the store has two or less of the HD-DVD drives.

KOTAKU IS TRYING TO GLOSS THIS OVER...but when the new's of "cheap HD-DVD players from china" comeing at rumor price of $299.00 why eliminate the lowest costing HD-DVD optical drive ..unless HD-DVD optical drives may just not be selling all that well...

I'd look for and buy that if:
1.) I hadn't bought a 360 and would get the elite, for 1080p
2.) I didn't think this war had pretty much been decided (I wasn't cheering for one over the other at first, but BD is just so superior. Look at the Children of Men/Good Shephard scenarios. That wouldn't happen w/ BD, because you don't have to make an entire batch to test them.)

I hear you can plug these into a USB slot on your PC with ease and be off to the races.

Too bad I still don't care about it at all. Maybe if they outright gave it to me for free and put it in my hands I might consider it...

These things really are cheap POS. Even almighty Amir is taking flack on AVS and has had people take him to task for it.

When "cheap Chinese players at WalMart and Joe Six Pack going ga-ga over them" are cited as "revolutionary" and "assuring HD-DVD's victory"...what do you think?

this makes it almost tempting to buy one and rent batman begins.....and troy too, actually....I can't recall any other title I would want off the top of my head...

then rip it to my PS3 HDD.....

but I refuse to support this format in any way...

I am really tempted to buy one, rip netflix'd movies to the HDD and then return it. I don't want HD DVD but I do want Serenity and a few other HD DVD exclusives.

Here's an idea if you don't want to "fuel the war" but still want to get some HD-DVD action going on: buy used. I've bought several HD-DVD titles but I try to buy them used if I can. A) they're cheaper and B) they're not counting as a new sell.

but you still buy the player...that's no good for me...

I'll just download the HD-DVD version of the movies I want until I get them on BD....

I mean, I already own these movies on SDVD...and I'm not supporting HD-DVD..

a little off topic. i read an article about toshiba and how it has a close relationship with GE. maybe thats why universal wont release on blu ray. this link tells us about GE and toshiba working together on silicon http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2006_09/pr1401.htm

does anyone know if there really is a close relationship between tosh and GE?

I disagree that all they play are flicks that nobody cares about.
There are quite a few that I wouldn’t mind having on Blu-ray.

Army of Darkness (it’s a classic)
Batman Begins
The Bourne Supremacy
Bruce Almighty
Constantine
Dragonheart
End of Days
The Frighteners
Matrix Trilogy
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
Pitch Black
The Rundown
Serenity
Troy
Van Helsing

Since Matrix, Constantine, and Batman Begins are owned by WB they will (or should) come out on BD in the near future, but yes I agree with you on the titles... Wouldnt mind seeing Mummy 1 & 2, Van Helsing, The Bourne series, and a few others that are Universal to come out on BD... But then again, I can wait till we win this format war
