Default Any Jail/Penitentiary guards here?

Hi guys I am thinking of a major job change here soon. I need to make more money to get my own house and I cannot think of a single thing I want to go to school for. I live in a city of approximately 45,000 in Canada and we have a Provincial Penitentiary here and I was thinking of possibly trying to get on as a guard.

Is there anyone here who does this for a living? I would greatly appreciate any info on what you think of it and what are some of the daily things that would be required of me in this line of work. Thanks again.

Don't know how it compares to the states but my brothers girlfriend works in corrections. She does alot of turndowns and cavity searches. Never ask anyone to describe those stories.

She makes good money though the hours are bad.

My dad is a federal corrections officer, I think federal is better than county from what I heard.

When I got out of the corps I looked at doing that kind of job. A few of my friends ended up doing it...

They make more as rookies than I will make with 8 years of college. A LOT more. Every one of them cleared $120,000 the first year, with a couple making well over that. Overtime is the money maker, meaning that likely, as you get rank and family, you have a good chance to make less money when you elect to spend time at home.

The downside is that they have to work in a prison with people who belong in prison. Every day.

Other jobs you might want to think about is working with your utility company as a lineman. They make crazy money. I have a friend who wors for PG&E in California who makes damn close to $200,000 a year. He is on call 24-7 and gets paid for 8 hours (to sober up) after they call him, before he gets to work... that means an hour job is worth about 10 hours regular pay

Downside is you ahve to work most of you good money hours in storms.

You can also make a huge amount of money driving in Iraq (at least you could). I talked with those guys and some of them were getting $400,000 tax free.

Downside is they cut your head off on youtube if they catch you.

i know a few guys who work in corrections in california and none of them make over $80k and they work a lot of overtime. my brother in law has been doing it for 8 years and makes decent money but he say he hates everyday of it.

I was thinking of ditching the "Desk-Job" life, and trying to become a Firefighter..... but the turnover rate right now is bad in my area, and I just turned 30 a couple of weeks ago, so I may be long in the tooth.....

whatever you do, don't change your mind.... if you want to choose a career path, stick with it, and do it right the first time!
