Default PS3 as a CD player

I've been using my PS3 as a CD player for quite some time now and today I've noticed that when the vocals get loud it almost sounds like my speakers are blown. Lots of static noise and very scratchy. I put the same CD in my Xbox360 and it sounded perfect and actually better than the PS3. Are my settings wrong and if so what do I need to change? Thanks.

Hopefully, your PS3 is not malfuntioning. Try some of these changes and see if you experience any difference:
  • Try both HDMI and Toslink/Optical cables.
  • Change the audio setting from PCM to bitstreaming.
  • Change the DRC from OFF to ON or Automatic.
  • Check the setting of your receiver.
  • Change anything else that comes to your mind.
If nothing helps, call Sony.

That might be it. I had similar issues with music playback. If your PS3 volume is at +1, +2, +3, or +whatever, it's going to sound bad. Keep it at 0.

Have you changed the default audio level of your PS3? Setting it to anything but neutral or 0 can produce clipped sound output.

I don't have a problem with my PS3, my audio level on my PS3 is 0. Going into pluses make it staticy, is the same thing for movies.

All you guys are awesome! I checked the PS3 volume and it was at +2 changed it to 0 and I got my great sound back. It now sounds better than my 360 which is good because my PS3 is easier to use for listening to CD's. I knew I could count on you guys for some help. Thanks again.

also, if you listen to a lot of CDs, I'd highly recommend getting a dedicated player..... there are many inexpensive options that will sound a LOT better than the PS3 or Xbox

The Cell does pretty good upsampling for CD too.
I find at 16/176.4 it is smoother sounding on good CD's than 16/44.1

Yeah but, I also like that I can store music on the hard drive too and flip flop between CDs and the HDD. Plus I use my PS3 for everything from watching movies to viewing pictures.

I like that you can run stuff from your PC through the PS3 too.

Yeah man, when you do that, you are skating in the realm of what you'd call "pre-gain" You are essentially creating a pre-amp scenario with your PS3 and then you receiver's pre-amp stage is being slammed with a more robust signal before it is amplified.

If you are doing this when playing the guitar...it is good.
If you are doing this when playing the audio gear...it is bad.

Glad you guys caught that.

Enjoy man,

Personally, I wouldn't bother. My PS3 replaced my dedicated Sony CD player after exhaustive listening test proved the PS3 sounded better than the CD player. When you switch in the upsampling feature on the PS3, its just no contest.

How do I get the PS3 to play unsampling?

Under "Music Settings" you can enable it under "Audio CD Output Frequency". You want to set it to 44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz. I would also set "Bitmapping" to type 3.

YES!! I should have posted here earlier because I had the same problem but thought it was my new 650W sub for some reason... I will try some Trivium in it now.

What does bitmapping do? I only understand the word used to describe graphics texturing, not CD sampling!

Bitmapping on the PS3 is really a dithering and noise shaping algorithm to make the upsampled audio a little cleaner with better sound. Most audiophiles recommend type 3.
