I think Sony should at least wait for 65nm chips before they make another sku. Don't follow MS mistakes...

I doubt I'll ever fill my 60GB so 20 GB would mean nothing to me.

That has to be a rumor and only that. Anyone could have made the picture. It would just be ridiculous, four months out, to add just 20GB. Anyway, I upgraded my PS3 to a brand new 100GB hdd for $50 (searching around eBay sometimes works!).

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony does come out with an updated PS3 with a larger hard drive as hard drive costs come down and their capacities go up.
Sony could offer the updated PS3s at no additional costs to new end users as they don't have to reengineer anything to get it to work. IMO there would be minimal fallout from current PS3 users as they have the 'choice' to upgrade to whatever sized drive they want to and still have a backup of EVERYTHING on their old drive. |

This 80GB model makes perfect sense.
The 60 GB model will be the new base model (since Sony stopped 20GB model production) and this 80 GB model will be the new top-of-the-line model. Quote:
With this announcement, I don't even know when MS would make their move to 65nm chips (as those 90nm chips were scorching hot and noisy). Dammit, MS, hurry it up with the hardware transition!!! |

Why do you need to buy a new version of a PS3 to get a larger hard drive. Don't you know they're upgradable.....if you wanted to, just go buy a 200Gig hard drive for your PS3.

Exactly. If anything, Sony would release a separate official PS3 hard drive, that was like 200GB. Sure, Sony doesn't make the hard drives, but they don't make half the parts in the PS3. They'd team up with someone to make an official one.

It doesn't really make sense to make another ps3 with an 80GB hard drive inside because we could take an 80GB hard drive by itself. Now if sony were to redesign the ps3 to be smaller with an 80GB hard drive, that would be a different story. I think that sony should work on a newer model for the ps3 because that would attact a bigger crowd then a larger hard drive. There's been rumors of a new PSP model in the works, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Maybe sony would reveal both a newer ps3 and psp model at the same time.

Is it to lower costs?

It could be to lower cost. The other possibility is that now the 80GB hard drive is the same cost as what the 60GB hard drive was 6 months ago. So now they give you more drive for the same price it costs them.
Also sometimes the manufacturer of the parts discontinue a particular part or increase its size/spec. If Sony used up all their 60GB sata drive already or the manufacturer discontinued that model they probably decided to go with the 80 cause they had no choice or they got more bang for their buck. Also possible Sony's buyer worked out a great deal on the 80GB drive so they were able to lower their overall cost since they do sell these units for a lost. So if they find a lower cost alternative they recoup some of their cost. We should complain if they decided to put in a 40GB drive, not an 80GB one. If you really wanted you could buy an 80GB drive and then sell the 60GB drive to keep in spec with the latest model. And yes according to the manual it shows you how to change the hard drive so it would be supported. Just make sure you put in one that has the same speed and access times or better else you might slow the system down. |

I agree with what you're saying. I really don't have a need for an 80GB hard drive right now. I have the 60GB model now. Adding updates to the ps3 only takes up about 10 GB of hard drive space. If you upgrade the hard drive, how do you transfer all the data to your new hard drive?
