Despicable Me Review Thread (Spoilers)

This is more of a teaser trailer as it really doesn't show the main character (Gru played by Steve Carell)

A trio of orphan girls cause the normally deplorable and evil Groo to rethink his plan to steal the moon.

Despicable Me is co-directed by Pierre Coffin (Gary's Fall), Chris Renaud (No Time for Nuts), and Sergio Pablos (Tarzan) of the new animation house Illumination Entertainment. The screenplay was co-written by writing partners Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul of films like Bubble Boy, The Santa Clause 2, Horton Hears a Who!, College Road Trip. Universal is bringing Despicable Me to theaters on July 9th, 2010 next summer.

Apparently, the Ice Age "Self-contained short" approach doesn't necessarily work for ALL third-party animateds.

If we still paid attention to listen closely, the reaason the pyramid deflates is that an Evil Villain (for which the trailer was intended to "tease" us, Ice Age style) has stolen it as part of his nefarious supervillain plot.

And no, despite the profile, our villain is NOT Montgomery Burns, but an even nastier foe who thinks we'll still get Alfred Hitchcock jokes.

Since July 2009, three different teaser trailers have been released for Illumination Entertainment’s computer animated feature Despicable Me (you can see them here: one, two, three). Each one is a little bit more confusing then the last, none of them showing what the movie is actually about.

Well, today Universal Pictures finally decided to do the full reveal, releasing a two minute and 42-second full length trailer which gives you a better look at the characters, story, and comedy of the upcoming film. I’m really digging the production and character design. Watch the movie trailer now.

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden deep beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by an army of tireless, little yellow minions, we discover Gru (Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal?s new 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me.

Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.

One of the world’s greatest super-villains has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

I screened this with my two children over the weekend. They loved it; I thought it was good but could have been a little better. It was refreshing that something non-Disney was scripted without using pop-culture puns

that are often common amongst Sony/Dreamworks/Universal animated releases. The humor worked for the target age range of the children at the screening (ages 8-14 was the primary target audience). I won't give away any plot details, but will only add that 3D does nothing extra for the film until the credits which were filled with common 3D sight-gags.

Overall: 6.5/10

Hollywood is in a dark place right now. The world is changing around it, and movie studios are struggling to adapt. We’ve already seen how studios have been trying to incorporate current technology-based trends and developments into everyday practice—whether it be through harnessing the power of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, or combating piracy with digital downloads—but so far none of these attempts have been met with much success or enthusiasm.

I doubt this latest experiment is going to change that.

In partnership with Universal, Best Buy has recently unveiled a movie app that encourages using your cell phone while watching Despicable Me. Find out more after the break.

Before even learning what the purpose of the downloadable movie app was, my response to this announcement was one of seething contempt. Dealing with self-involved *******s in theaters casually whipping out their cell phones (read: glowing eye-sores) is bad enough already, but now we have to contend with studios actually encouraging the behavior?

Truth is, it’s not quite as horrifying as you might assume, even if it does make me nervous of things to come. The app only takes effect during the film’s end credits, where it will provide a text translation of Despicable Me’s minion characters’ dialogue.

Strangely though, the advert for the download tells you to turn it on as soon as you get into the theater.

Best Buy claims that the app “automatically dims the mobile screen, silences the ringer and discourages texting”, so at least they’re paying mind to other moviegoers. Knowing society though, many people will forget to set their phones to Best Buy’s Movie Mode until after the movie starts, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll see cell lights flashing on anyway. Also, “discouraging texting”? How can an app “discourage” texting? Does the program scold you? Express disappointment in your actions? Really, Best Buy, I’d like to know.

The implications of this practice aside, the app does provide at least one useful service, although it’s one that won’t be relevant until several months from now, when the film hits DVD and Blu-ray. Instead of merely translating the minions’ dialogue during the end credits, it will allow you to decipher what they’re saying throughout the whole film. In the comfort of your own home, where there are no other theater patrons to bother, this actually sounds pretty nifty. But for now, I don’t see anything good coming of this.

I built the print for this today (digitally) and in the trailers right before the feature they EMPHATICALLY STATE (with a cool 3D spot) NOT TO USE THE APP UNTIL AFETR THE FEATURE BUT DURING THE CREDITS.

I REPEAT, STILL SEE THIS IN THEATERS THE APP ONLY WORKS AT THE END DURING THE CREDITS!!!
