PS3 Display Settings: Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI) ON or OFF?

Hi all,

This is a techinal question I have no understanding of but really need advice.

I got 1 year old 40'' HD-ready Sony BRAVIA LCD HDTV (KDL40S2000) connected to my PS3 via HDMI cable.

Go to the Display Settings and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI), now should the option be ON or OFF?? What is the best??

What is this Super-White option do? What's the difference with ON and OFF?

Please educate me, thanks in advance.




I also experiemented with the Display Settings RGB Full Range and turned it to Full. I notice that the dark spot is alot darker (more diffecult to see detail in the dark spot) BUT the color vibrant is alot better. I'm still not sure weather to set this to Full or Limited

What do people here recomend?

superwhite on, rgb full. My guess are that the options are set to the opposites by default to make the PS3 look decent on poorly calibrated tvs (like if they are set too dark or too bright, the PS3 output will still be adequate). But if you've custom set the brightness/contrast/etc. to your liking, you should get a better picture with superwhite on & rgb set to full.

turn super white to on but leave RGB to limited if you want shadow detail otherwise you get black crush with RGB full.

Yeah, I saw the black crush with the RGB on full, as well, Then I brought up the brightness, and I seemed to get it back.

I wonder what the benefits are of RGB full, in the first place? Why even have it?

I have thought about using these myself but haven't tried yet.... My thoughts would be to log all the current settings you have now... Then turn on those options and do a new calibration as the contrast and others will be changing to get the new setup correct.... Then try out some Blu's you enjoy and see... Keep it if you like it or set it back to original way with notes you made...

I tried it with the full and it was way too dark so I tried limited and it looked good, but I'll raise the brightness and see if it's better in full...thanks.

I just picked up a Sony Bravia KDL-52W3000. How would I calibrate it? Do I need a professional? I will also try applying these settings to my PS3.

Maybe I'm not using the right BD (Die Hard), but the picture looks better to me with the RGB Full and the Super-White on. I'm not sure I can tell a difference between Full and Limited besides the darkness, but they're both an improvement on what I had before.

I used the THX optimiser that comes on Disney/Pixar DVD's like " The Lion King ".... There's a newer one on the Ratatouille Blu-ray but I found that too hard.... You can also use many Sony Blu-rays buy pressing 7-6-6-9 on the menu... but those are just test screens. I found the THX Optimiser to be the best !

Make sure you turn on all extras you want before you start making adjustments to contrast and brightness and others. Eg: Turn on advanced contrast before setting picture/ brightness setup.... Theres many people who can help on here....

Computer levels = 0-255, Black = 0 White = 255
video levels = 16-235, Black = 16 White = 235

Full = 0-255, Black = 0 White = 255
Limited = 16-235, Black = 16 White = 235


Select Full if your display expects computer levels on its RGB input
Select Limited if your display expects video levels on its RGB input

No matter which goes in which, in both:
Black = no light output and White = maximum light output if you want to get your display's full dynamic/ansi contrast ratio.
So there won't be any below black or above white if you want that.
And both after being calibrated correctly should look the same. (Have the same blacks, whites, and greys.)

PS3 'BD settings' and 'display settings' set to RGB Full=TV must be set to RGB dynamic range full.

PS3 'BD settings' and 'display settings' set to RGB Limited= TV can be set to Dynamic range AUTO or LIMITED.

Superwhite only applies if Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr is selected.

If you use RGB for Blu-ray, select limited otherwise you will have crushed blacks with most TV's factory settings, but best of all use Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr and superwhite on for Blu-ray playback and RGB limited for games.

Adjust output settings for TVs that support Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr input signals. Super-white signal can be output when playing a DVD, Blu-ray Disc (BD), or AVCHD-format video. This setting is for use when the TV is connected to the PS3™ system using an HDMI cable.
Off Disable super-white output.
On Enable super-white output.
Hints
If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when this option is set to [On], set to [Off].
[Automatic] or [Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr] must be selected in [BD / DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)] under (Settings) > (BD / DVD Settings). *

About x.v.Color / x.v.Colour
When this function is set to [On], content from AVCHD-format video files recorded in x.v.Color / x.v.Colour can be played with a wide color scale.

x.v.Color / x.v.Colour is a trademark proposed by Sony as the name to be assigned to devices that support "xvYCC," which is an international standard for color space in moving images. An advantage of x.v.Color / x.v.Colour is that it can reproduce a wider color scale than the conventional standard.
Hints
A TV that is compatible with x.v.Color (xvYCC) / x.v.Colour (xvYCC) must be connected via an HDMI cable
Content from an AVCHD-format video file recorded in x.v.Color / x.v.Colour is required to use this setting.


RGB Full Range (HDMI)
Adjust the output settings for TVs that support RGB full range. For RGB video signals, the range of color scale that is input varies depending on the TV in use. This setting is for use when the TV is connected to the PS3™ system using an HDMI cable.

Limited RGB output signal is output in the range from 16 to 235.
Full RGB output signal is output in the range from 0 to 255.

Hints
If black sometimes appears bright and sometimes appears pale on the screen when [Limited] is selected, set this option to [Full].
If black appears dull on the screen when [Full] is selected, set this option to [Limited].

Off. Only use it for DVDs which have rainbow like artifacting.

Shutter, if I may add my late advice...

On your display, for Blu-ray/DVD playback through HDMI, you want the following settings:

BD / DVD Settings -- BD / DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) -- Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr

This first setting causes video from Blu-rays and DVDs to be output as Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr (and doesn't affect games, which are always output as RGB). I recommend this because Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr outputs at correct reference video levels.

Display Settings -- Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI) -- On

This second setting allows the PS3 to output the blacker-than-black (BTB) and whiter-than-white (WTW) portions of the video signal (a must for accurate video). The combination of Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr and Super-White On is the only way to get BTB and WTW.

I do not recommend using RGB for BD/DVD Output Format. RGB Limited will give you correct video levels, but not BTB and WTW. RGB Full will give you computer levels (not what you want with your display), which as others have mentioned will result in major black crushing, and still no BTB or WTW.

Maybe that's why movies look great on my "tv", as blacks blacker than black, are black. Wether they are on a TV, screen, or computer monitor...
