Default PS3 and blu-rays

I have a PS3 which I use for my blu-rays and a 1366x768 HDTV. I have noticed on the blu rays that they have an output of 1080p and nothing lower. I don't have a 1080p TV so do you know what resolution I will be watching them at? I played Corpse Bride today and couldn't really tell. I was'nt wowed by the clarity at all. I watched Casino Royale and although the colouring was a little off the picture was clear.

Over time there could well be 720p Blu-ray disc's (BD) out there even lower. The PS3 can down convert and your TV can most probably do likewise. 1080p on the disc is good as when you get a 1080p TV you will be able to enjoy the extra resolution. Until then you will get at whatever resolution you TV can support.

If you werent wowed by the picture; you need to get an actual 1080p HDTV and an HDMI cable. Then you will say wow!

Default it is 720p

The resolution you are watching depends 1st the tv and connection type and two the set up of the PS3. If you are using HDMI and used the auto setup the PS3 checked the max resolution of your tv and is outputting 720p for all of your movies.

If you are using component cable (green, blue and red) then make sure that you video settings are set to 720p output. This will improve the picture because the tv does not have to scale the image into it's 720p native resolution. If it is set to 1080i, 480i, 480p for blu-ray play back then the tv will have to convert the image and in the process add some video noise.(though it is very little)

If you are using the cables that came with the PS3 (yellow, red and white audio) then go out and get component or a HDMI depending on what your tv can handle. Why well you can not get 720p HD over the composite or YELLOW conector. the Tv will convert the image to 720p but trust me you are NOT getting a HD image when this happens. Sure the picture looks clear but if you get the PS3/2 component cable or HDMI you be shocked at the difference.

They are connected by HDMI. Think it was set-up was auto. 480i 720i and 1080i are all ticked, 1080p isn't because the PS3 recognised the fact tat my TV does not support it.
So, it looks like I'm viewing in 720i and not 1080i?

Yes you are viewing at 720p then. Now worries because 720p and 1080i are both part of the HD broadcast standard. PPl will debate for years on the differences of the two but trust me, you will be beyond hard pressed to tell a diffence between the two.

Enjoy, I do.

PS3 best purchace I have made

You have 768 x 1366 pixels. That would be the maximum pixels your display could ever show. You have 480, 720, and 1080i ticked. Since your display accepts a 1080i input you use that setting on the PS3 to watch BD movies. Your TV then takes the 1080i signal and fits it into your 768 x 1366.
