Default Help A Newbie

Hey guys-

I'm looking to get a sound system/speakers for my tv. I was leaning towards BOSE, but I did some googling and found all the complaints here. So, hoping for advice.

I've got an Insignia Blu-Ray player, and an insignia 42' LCD 1080P TV, if that makes any diffrence on sound.

I'm able to spend around 500 dollars.

I don't need anything too loud- I'm in an apartment with thin walls. More looking for sound clarity, and sorround sound. Thanks!

-Jimmy

I am not sure that you'll be able to buy a "good" complete system for $500.

For $500 there are several choices for a good receiver. Search around this site but I am thinking Sony, Onkyo, or Yamaha has offerings in that price range. For another $1000 to $2000, you could find a decent 5.1 speaker system from companies such as B&W (even their low end speakers sound great) and Sunfire (new system featured in Home Theater Mag), Klipsch, plus many others.

If you prefer to stick to a $500 budget, I recommend heading to a good electronics dealer and listen to their HTIB offerings.

Finally, check the used market, check http://www.audiogon.com/ to determine how far you can stretch your dollar.

Ye olde Onkyo 605/606 and Polk RM6750 combo is a pretty good way to spend about $500.

Not knocking the OP, but considering the Insignia branded equipment, I would think that would be right up his alley. It'll kill a Bose setup.

Thanks Aramis!

Yeah, I know Insignia isn't the flashiest, but I've got to be thrifty and I read enough good reviews on them. I'll check that equipment out...hopefully in ten years or so I can afford to go all out with the best stuff, but for now just trying to enjoy some blu-rays in my means
