Default 7.1 on a 5.1 system

Continuing my barrage of audio questions, although this is a bit simpler. What happens when you listen to a 7.1 soundtrack on a 5.1 system? Do you lose the 2 channels entirely or is their audio incorporated into the other speakers?

Thanks in advance.

I believe it is incorporated with the rear channels.

It depends on how the sound track is encoded. If the channels are discrete, then you'll lose the two rear channels, unless your receiver can matrix them in.

In other cases the two rear channels are just duplicates of the surround channels.

That makes me wonder, How do you know if your reciever can matrix in the sound or not? my receiver guide said something about downmixing 7.1 to 6.1 or 5.1 is this the same? and would it work in reverse? from 5.1 to 6.1(which is what I want to do. don't have room for 7.1).

You read the manual or call them.
Yes and yes depending on what you own.
