Default PSP isn't working

Hi all,

I brought my PSP to the Philippines with me. At some point I was just browsing my memory card through the XMB. I had 3 bars of power and the PSP just went dead on me. I had no charger with me so I've bought a USB charger cable. I already had a charger cable but its never worked for me. It seems this one is doing the same as well.

Symtoms -

Sometimes after a long USB charge I can get the screen to come on. Since i've taken the battery completely out I get the date/time screen. Once I done that I get the XMB fine. Unfortunately the charge only lasts a few seconds after that.

If I put the USB cable in, the screen goes off and the light turns orange. If I try to turn on the PSP at this point, I see a flicker on the screen but then it goes out again, the light will temporarily go green but then revert back to solid orange.

Since I can get the XMB up sometimes, I know the unit is still in working shape. I think my unit does not like the USB charger cables I am using. Since everytime I use a USB cable it turns off. My friend had a USB cable from the UK which I used on this machine and it worked whilst it was plugged in. Unfortunately for me i've never bought one that works like that.

I think the battery is bad. Sometimes its charge lasts only a short time and it dies even though 3 bars of power are there. I will test it when I Get home with the mains charger, but I must admit not having it around when i'm mobile is making a bit mad. The USB charger cable issue is confusing the hell out of me as well.

Any help is appreciated.

Machine is standard spec, no hacking or illegal f/w on my machine.

I'm not sure as I haven't turned my PSP on in months, but is there a firmware option to charge the battery while connected to USB. Possibly it's just drawing power to run the device, but not charge. It may even just be an option with custom firmware. I have no idea.

I think in the last firmware update one of the new things added was that the PSP will turn on USB mode as soon as it's connected to a USB device (which you can turn off), but that shouldn't affect the battery life. It definitely sounds like a battery issue, if you know someone with similar spec PSP ask nicely if you can borrow their battery just to test. Otherwise just buy another battery (I would personally go with the official Sony one instead of a third party's).

thanks for your help guys. I will test it with my friends PSP battery next week. If that works I'll just purchase a new one from Sony.

Hmmm, well I just got home from the Phils and now back in UK.

Everything works now. Maybe it was the PC I was using.
