So i've been interested in the Oppo BDP-93 for a while now. I see that many of the Blu-ray.com people are fans of it. I realize it's a top of the line player and all of that but I have some questions before I get serious about buying one. Before I go asking questions i'll tell you all what my setup is. I have a Panasonic 50" G25 Plasma Display, and for Blu-ray I'm currently using a PS3. I run all my HDMI devices (PS3, XBOX, Cable Box) Through my Sony receiver into 1 HDMI Port on my TV. Not sure if running stuff through it like that degrades the picture quality, so I thought i'd bring that fact up. Now some questions! First will I notice any difference in Picture, Audio or any other sort of quality comparing it to my PS3? What are the main reasons why someone would want to spend $500 on a player? I've seen that you can buy an additional "Region Free" Adapter, anyone that is currently using this tell me how it works and if they think it would be worth while? I do like ordering movies out of region, don't have any region locked stuff yet but I would definitely get some if the Chip was worthwhile. Thats really all I have to ask. If you have anything else to add, as i'm sure i'm forgetting things please feel free to address them. Thanks in advance
![]() EDIT: Thought of another question, how good is it at Upconverting DVD's? I don't do this very often just on a few TV Shows I own. Last edited by aimforsilence; 01-29-2012 at 11:30 PM. |

I hear the Oppos and very good. I am interested in one myself. Like my LG I love the option of built in wireless and I'm almost sure the Oppo doesn't have this. I was also looking at the integra DBS. I may go for an Oppo. As far as the pic quality the HDMI on receivers is basically used as a pass through and you will not lose pic quality. The Oppo will make sure of that. Pic quality from the Oppo will differ a little compared to the ps3. Don't know if it will be a "huge" difference. As far as I know, best buy Magnolia can order Oppo now....at least that's what I heard.

i'm not gonna try to sell anyone a 93. for the OP, if you want to know why anyone would spend $500 for a blu-ray player just do a search under oppo 93 in the blu-ray player section of this site and you'll have plenty of answers. also it's the most winningest player of it's type ever, check all the a/v mag awards it's won.
for the second poster, the 93 does offer 802.11n wi-fi via a usb adapter that comes with it. i own 2 oppos, a 93 & 83; i also own a ps3 slim. wouldn't get rid of any of them. my ps3 is for gaming and my oppos are for blu-ray, dvd, SACD, DVD-a, HDCD and outta the box with no software needed FLAC audio support. both the ps3 & oppo's are great machines, one just needs to know what one wants from either and then makes a choice. best of luck to you op, having said that, the asking price is $500. if you don't want to spend that amount for it, then it's not for you. no one needs to sell it to you, that's a choice your gonna have to make for yourself. i will say, for 2 generations of blu-ray machines, with 10's of thousands sold and no end in sight for sales to slow down or stop, and dozens of awards including product of the year, twice by many reviewer mags, well, hard to think they are all wrong or just trying to fool folks into buying oppo. ![]() again, best of luck to the op no matter what you decide. please keep us posted. |

I posted about the region free modification in the Oppo thread as I just updated my player. I'm quoting myself here:
I just region free modified my 93 a couple days ago. It really is super easy. I've demoed a few Region 2 and B discs and they work great. I highly recommend it. You can attach it externally on the back of the player or internally where no one is going to see it. I opted to crack it open, which I promise is way easier than someone might think and requires no skills whatsoever. I bought my mod from ebay. Here's the link for the exact one I ordered and at $30, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than most other sites out there. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OPPO-BDP-93-...ht_3805wt_1164 Here are instructions to install: http://www.imegstore.com/download/BD...anual_V1.4.pdf In terms of DVD scaling, it's fantastic. You can also find the same chip in the top of the line Pioneer and Onkyo BD players, but the Oppo offers a few other streaming options (via Wifi or LAN) that the others don't. Not to mention the player is a sexy looking beast. |

Both these links are broken. Doesn't installing a mod void the oppo warranty? I have a 93 and was thinking about doing the mod but I'm not sure I should.

Yes it does, whenever their product have been modified beyond its original specifications, without the company's authorization, if a techical malfunction occurs. This doesn't just apply only to Oppo, but to all electronic manufacturers as well.

If you are interested in the Oppo 93/95 mod, search ebay for "oppo mod" and you'll find many results. The seller "gradedexchange" sells them for $30 and includes instructions.
Also, if you are worried about voiding the warranty, the mod can be attached externally with no worries. |

Not in Australia it's doesn't. Merlin Audio Design/Opposhop have been the official importers and repairers of Oppo products here in Australia for years (I'm pretty sure a new company was named the official imports of Oppo products for Australia and New Zealand in January), they are the 1's who cover the warranty for Oppo here in Australia (Oppo send them whatever parts they need for warranty repairs for free), and they only sell Oppo players that are modded with the region free software and hardware mod's.

Hi Umich
So installing externally will not endanger my oppo 93, also is installing externally just the same as installing internally, does one way work better than the other I saw the one your talking about for 29.99 on eBay , did you buy from that seller. I think I may do this. I want double indemnity and the lost weekend and only the UK has them Thanks Quote:

So looks like putting off spending the $500 may come to an end.. Found out my PS3 won't play 1080i50 content... Plus the lack of .mkv support also has bothered me for quite some time. So Looks like it's time to Oppo up. So what would be the best place to get one in Canada?

The cheap mod kits are cheap because you have to restart the player for the region change to take place, and needs a resume' of button presses as well.
Have a look at this site, to illustrate the difference. There is an option to download fitting instructions http://www.bluraychip.dk/category.php?id_category=5 |

I recall the days when I used to put an LP on my turntable and listen to it from beginning to end, but that was many years ago and my transition to digital playback somehow dealt a blow to my enjoyment of music. Instead I found myself listening to the equipment rather than the music itself. Over the past twenty or so years I’ve been through four CD players, one with an outboard DAC and the last a SACD/DVD player that cost me around $1000. None had satisfying sound and I was at the point of replacing my old preamp in hopes that would fix things. The path I took was somewhat different.
My desire for a Blu-ray player and the positive reviews for it led me to the BDP-95. I was most concerned about video, but had no idea what to expect from the audio section. What a surprise! Every CD in my library has come to life. Several hundred CDs that I haven’t listened to in years are now scattered around the family room, and some I have played over and over with my eyes closed and at times I get chills from the sound I’m getting out of this thing. I find myself getting up at 3AM to go downstairs and listen to Vivaldi, and my Sheryl Crow SACD is lucky to still be in one piece. Television shows I would always have on my schedule are now frequently missed so I can listen to music. Is it expensive? Perhaps. But if you bring all of your CDs off the shelf and suddenly that library of DVDs looks to be Hi-def, then the return is well worth the cost. The old preamp is just fine, as is the amp. The speakers are extraordinary. No expensive upgrades and the replacement of admittedly old components. Just one addition – the Oppo BDP-95 and everything is now right in the world. |

One of the best purchases I have ever done when it comes to blu-ray. Everything from the way it's packaged to the look and feel of the blu-ray player screams professional. Oppo as a brand is outstanding and I don't see how you could be disappointed. |

Just ordered the BDP-93. Really really excited to get it in a few days and try it out! Thanks everyone for the recommendations! I'll let you know what my thoughts are once I get it! Might even order the USB external Region free mod down the road to!
