Default Watching TV without the Receiver

I think I know the answer to this question, but I'm not sure.

Right now I have my DirectTv DVR and Blu-Ray Player connected to my receiver through two HDMI inputs and one output HDMI to my TV. Every time I watch the TV I have been using my HT. I wanted to know if there was a way to use the TV without the receiver like for watching the news or my daughter watching cartoons where my HT isn't necessary. I was thinking about using a optical cable from my Directtv receiver to the TV for audio, but I won't get video if my receiver is not on. I think I would have to use the regular coax cable if I want video.

Any ideas would be helpful.

I don't think you can get video with out turning on your receiver but on my onkyo if you set hdmi audio to on you can use the tv for sound.Unless your receiver upscales 1080i to 1080p or you already have 1080p source you should just go component to tv and optical from your box to the receiver and that will give you the flexibility you want.

connect DirecTV directly to the TV and use an Optical cable for audio. If optical does not work simultaneously with HDMI, then just use Red/White analog to the receiver. Most tv shows are in 2.0 anyway.

That way you can watch and listen to TV without the receiver on...then when you want the surround sound (prologicIIx) just switch on the receiver. Thats how I have mine. (Dishnetwork though)

thanks for the replies. If I did it this way, would I lose any audio?
