Default sub going in and out

It seems like when I'm watching normal tv the amplifier on my sub goes on and off, making a noise like it's beating one beat every time it does it. Does the amplifier have to be set somewhere way out of the way of sound or something? I don't know what's going on with this.

I'm pretty sure that it is at a lower volume when this is happening and it's the subwoofer's auto shutoff that is making that noise. It isn't sensing a signal strong enough or the sub isn't needed (crossover) and it is shutting off

Well I would just leave it off, but when I go to hd channels on my tivo, I don't want to run over and turn it on.
Can I adjust this on the receiver? I the LFE level and it says dolby digital, dts, multich pcm, dolby truehd, dts-hd master, and dsd.
