I actually think this year is interesting unlike last year when it was pretty obvious that Soul would win (the only competition it had was Wolfwalkers and a foreign film never really had a chance). But this time we have the hyped Sony film The Mitchells vs the Machines - could they beat Pixar and Disney like they did with Spiderverse? Pixar also released Luca, a charming tale of friendship that was highly regarded, and Encanto is going to be Disney's big Musical film of the year, so I don't know I could see any of them win this year...

If I had to guess I'd say either Raya or Encanto

I think Belle, Luca, and Raya are likely to show up as nominees. Off the top of my head Encanto and Mitchells would be my last two guesses, but can see Ron’s Gone Wrong or Demon Slayer (these anime type movies don’t usually get in, but had big box office success and I think works even as a stand alone if you are not familiar with the series like how I saw it) as possible too.

Croods released last Thanksgiving. I believe the eligibility is March-December of this year (the pandemic has made it all a bit confusing)

Of course. You can’t get these idiots to pay serious attention to phenomenal 2D works like Belle and Flee |

The Oscar is practically a giveaway to which ever best Disney or Pixar film came out that year. Unless something like Spiderverse comes out and makes a lot of late buzz, but that case was a rarity.
Personally I'm not the biggest complainer of this when I typically love Disney's output and appreciate that they don't just put out silly kid fodder films like all the other major animation studios. But would certainly love if the academy gave more attention to the indie/foreign animation films. Though at least they tend to nominate a couple each year. |
