Default Hdmi Vs Optical

Hi everyone.

I know this question has been asked before but I just need to be sure of the answer before I make a potentially expensive mistake.

I currently use a PS3 with a Sony surround sound system (which I got last year). Picture via HDMI, sound via Optical. The Sony surround system is not capable of sound via HDMI.
I am considering buying a new AV receiver (Onkyo TXSR806 - £499 - $900) which does do True HD. Now before I part with my money I would like to ask all of you guys - the experts - will I notice a huge difference in sound? Is it worth spending all that extra money?
I appreciate any advice you can offer. I certainly don't want to go into the store unsure of what I am talking about. Otherwise I know they will just feed me the usual sales pitch.

Thank you for your help.

Chris.
