Okay, I realize that I need a laptop hard drive, and it's suggested that I get a 5400 one not a 7200.
Is there a specific size limit that I should be aware of? I've heard conflicting reports of how the Ps3's performance will lag or whatever if the HD is too large? I was thinking of getting a 500g laptop HD. So here are my questions: 1. What brand is the best? I've used WD and Seagate's in the past, as well as Maxtor. What is the longest lasting, least amount of problems. Overheating, etc. 2. What is the max size I can get without it affecting the PS3 performance. 3. Anything else I need to know about getting a new HD for the PS3? |

IMHO seagate is probably the best brand to get for hard drives. I have used them my whole life and have never had an issue Only other things to be aware of...back up your save game data, music and vids etc if need be to a thumb drive......also be careful when taking out the original hard drive. the screws that hold it in place can be quite hard to get out and will strip very easily! Other than that you have nothing to worry about |

I have not heard anything about a 320gb limit. You might want to look into that if you are thinking of going larger. The only problem i have heard of is there is a 2.5" SATA drive that is actually a little too thick for the PS3 slot because the drive has extra disc for higher capacity. I cant remember which company makes it, but I am thinking Western Digital.
As far as drive speed, it really makes no difference in performance. A faster or slower drive is not going to have a large effect on load times or anything. Some will tell you to go with a 5400rpm to help with the heat output, but it really should not matter. |

Many of the 7200 drives are more efficient than some of the 5400 drives.
I just stuck in a WD 320GB 7200 RPM Scorpio Black from newegg.com. |

as for drive speed, the difference between the 2 is going to be a second here and maybe 2 seconds there. probably not worth the price difference. just stick with 5400 as for brand, its all personal preference. everyone has a brand they hate because they "always break down on them!" and everyone has a brand thats never done them wrong. well they all break..none more than another, its all preference. |

The size issue comes from a bunch of ingnorent people who dont understand that storage size is not uniformly counted. In this world a Gig is not a Gig.
The problem si that as the advertised size gets larger, the difference in how the computer counts it gets larger... So a 500GB drive will show more "loss" than a 320GB, and the 320 will show more "loss" than a 60Gb... In short, people are stupid and have no idea how counting works, so they claim the PS3 cannot take XXXGB hard drives... the limit people claimed used to be 120GB, then it was 250GB, now it seems to be 320GB... in two weeks people will be claiming the PS3 cant read larger than a 2TB HD ![]() |

Like xtop said, when people started swapping them out the biggest 2.5" drive was 320GB. As for people who don't understand why it doesn't show the 'whole' drive size, it has been like that since HDDs hit multiple MBs. 1KB = 1024B, not 1000 despite the naming.

I installed a Western Digital Scorpio 320 GB 5200 drive in my PS3, and it works flawlessly. One surprise I didn't expect is that it's quieter than the stock Seagate Momentus drive, which I thought was really quiet.
I bought mine off Ebay brand new for $59 about 4 months ago. I managed to swap it out in about 20 minutes without an issue. Just make sure you have a good electronics jewel screwdriver set, otherwise there's a good chance you'll strip the retaining screws. All in all, swapping out the drive was super easy and well worth it. |

Hey. I don't know a whole lot about switching hard drives, so I was wondering if anyone could let me know if this internal drive would be good for my PS3:
WESTERN DIGITAL WD3200BEVT SCORPIO 320GB INTERNAL SERIAL ATA-300 5,400 RPM 8MB NOTEBOOK 2.5" HARD DRIVE I know that it is the right size and all, but was wondering if anyone else had this and could let me know how it is working for them in their PS3. Thanks. |

One thing I would like to mention is get the biggest drive you can, for example my 500 gig was only 465 after formatting and about 413 after the PS3 files were installed. Just something to consider. Last edited by LarryMoeCurly; 12-15-2008 at 05:07 AM. |
